Knog Oi Modification

This may be the most exciting cycling related development you see today so I hope you're seated.

I recently purchased a cheap Knog Oi bell to try and on receipt I can echo what others have said about its quality, function and volume. None are all that good and for $20.00 I would have returned it. But for half that the return shipping made it impractical so I gave some thought on what might improve it some. In it's original form, beyond its the functionally no better than the $3 bell that came with the bike. Part of the problem as I see it is the plastic striker. Better and louder bells all have metal strikers. The plastic on metal contact can't help but be a bit muted. So how to improve. Because I do a lot of guitar set up, repair and modification work I have a decent assortment of tools and odd hardware available. And the idea of a small screw head or similar as a metal striker seemed viable. And here is how that went:

Flattened the top of the original nub a bit and drilled a small hole to accommodate said small screw:

Cut small screw to length:

Insert small screw into hole:

See how things fit and function:

And voila! It works. And works very well. Two distinct areas of improvement. First is the volume and clarity. Crisp and louder. How much? I don't know, but it's a better sound. Second, because the screw head is a bit taller than the nub it replaced the striker to bell distance is reduced just enough that you don't need as long a pull for the striker to make contact with the bell so it's a more efficient and controllable. And to do again I would be more careful on the depth or the screw hole as there is not a lot of material there to work with. There is plenty but not as much as I had though as my drilling did work into and just under the thumb depression and that is visible. So shorter screw and less deep drilling. Otherwise a fairly quick and easy upgrade.

Exciting right? Told you...

I buy cheap crap all the time with no expectation of returning anything, mostly because I don't know if it will fit or work for what I want it to do.

I bought a four dollar watch to stick to my e-bike so I could see what time it was without pulling over and checking my phone.

It fell apart when I tried to set the time, so I threw it out and bought a high quality waterproof version with "Japanese Movement" and a light for fifteen bucks. 😂

That one has been working fine for a year and a half.

I usually try and fix the crap to make it work, but I wasn't going to put ten bucks worth of effort into a four dollar watch, so I just tossed it out. 😂

Flattened the top of the original nub a bit and drilled a small hole to accommodate said small screw:

PS,.. I've learned to heat the screw with a flame then it melts its own hole and stays put when the plastic hardens up.
You can also melt a pilot hole with a needle or nail to start.

It's faster and easier than drilling, but if you overdo it with the heat, you melt your whole project. 😂

Practice makes perfect (hopefully without too much waste. 😂)

I bought this fancy bell for less than four bucks on sale,..

It's all metal with an aluminum alloy bar clamp.

I didn't even want the bell. I just bought it for the aluminum handlebar clamp. 😂

THIS is groundbreaking!

On a more serious note, awesome work! Sometimes things just need a little love and care. Now you can trust your equipment. Which is EXTREMELY important to the user. Thanks for sharing.

And I found a fancy six dollar version that appears to use the same 2000 year old technology of "How to ring a bell" as the Knog Oi 🛎

The time and effort involved in re-engineering the lost ancient art of how to ring a bell is outstanding to say the least !!
I listened to the four second sound bite, and it Does Indeed sound like a bicycle bell !! 😂

I wonder if the ancient people's used a metal clacker for their bells?
Maybe they didn't use plastic because it wasn't invented yet?

I'm sure that a plastic clacker for a bell is a vast improvement over the old-school metal or stone clackers of yesteryear?

The Even Fancier version of that same ancient design for less for six and a half bucks,..

So now I just need to buy two more things to get free shipping.
I could use another shock pump.
They work great as a regular pump to carry on my e-bike, because it has a long throw, high volume handle.

And remember everyone,..
A dollar spent is not a BUCKLOS.
It is a dollars worth of carbon fiber handlebar stem spacers that you may need someday. 😂
