IZip E3 Path+ 2016 Review

Always a staple in the City Bike styled ebikes, this 2016 model has changed to a mid drive Shimano Steps system. This really improves the weight distribution with the rear rack mounted battery is nicely balanced with the motor in the cranks. It's a more nimble handling bike with slightly more narrow hybrid tires but a bit more stiff feeling. I like the integrated rack, fenders and clean wiring set up along with quick release levers on both the front and rear wheels. Makes changing flats much easier!

https://electricbikereview.com/izip/e... The IZIP E3 Path+ for 2016 is an efficient, light weight commuter electric bike available in two frame sizes and high-step or step-thru styles, the adjustable stem and swept back bars support a surprisingly comfortable upright body position. Narrower tires, firm saddle and all-Aluminum frame and fork provide great power transfer when pedaling but aren't super comfortable when riding across bumpy terrain. Integrated plastic fenders, sturdy adjustable-length kickstand, integrated handle in the saddle and a functional rear rack with standard-sized tubing for use with a trunk bag or panniers. The battery is light weight and streamlined in appearance but has to be removed from the bike to charge which presents more opportunities for accidental drops, smaller display panel isn't as easy to read but is removable for safe keeping.

We just purchased an Avanti Discovery E with Shimano Steps drive, this is similar bike but with front shocks. The battery range is impressive, only used 45% after a 47km ride, average speed was 15km/hr. Most of ride was on flat but it did involve a 180m climb and descent over a few kms. My wife was still learning about the bike so tended to use Normal or Sport modes when Eco would have been OK for most of this ride. We live in a very hilly city, so far the only grade it couldn't climb was very steep section which I grind my up on a MTB in granny gear. Even this short hill wasn't a problem with Walk mode. NB it is possible to lower gearing slight by changing the standard 44t chain ring with a 38t.

The Avanti comes with new larger display, and battery can be charged on bike.

Always good to have options, @TrevorB ! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Avanti, the Shimano Steps system isn't as common yet in the ebike world.

The same steep hill section my wife walked Discovery E up, our fit 13 yr (45kg) son flew up at 15km/hr. My son complete my usual after work uphill commute trip in 22 minutes on ebike, it typically takes me 35 minutes and lot sweat on a MTB.

Besides allowing us older less fit people enjoy riding, ebikes can benefit younger fitter members of family. Instead of driving your 11-16yr to distant activities, they can drive themselves on an ebike. I can see our ebike becoming an alternative to a 2nd car, which everybody in family can use.

The only worry my son has with using the ebike is he may not enjoy riding his MTB anymore.

That's fabulous, @TrevorB that the whole family is out biking more! It's one of the main reasons folks come by our shop for ebikes. I wouldn't worry about your son too much; you may find that he get's out their more consistently and exercises more regularly with the ebike (as you are probably doing) without as much down time from the summer heat or winter chill. Besides, if he really likes to do real mountain bike trails, he'll probably still want to ride that MTB.
