I’m quite sure the future holds some very cool (and probably very expensive) ebike technology! Much lighter, longer lasting batteries, with lots more safety features like ABS and non-explosive batteries!

Yamaha Power Assisted Bikes in the US have consistently refused to listen to dealer and customer requests to add a step through ebike to their US line.

Yes I suspect Yamaha may have a distribution deal with Giant not to sell step through Yamaha branded ebikes in the US market, it’s the only reasonable explanation for why they refuse to listen to constructive feedback

This guy is good at doing an interview and saying nothing.
'That is about the same...'
'Not much has changed...'
A low ball interviewer, not really asking any real questions, just enough to get lame PR responses.

In the end Yamaha is going to try to make better motors like everyone else in the e-bike / electric motor business. No idea how they expect to be more competitive this time around.

“The market differences between Europe and the US are very big.
I consider the e-bikes distributed in the US not good enough for a mature market like here in Europe.
That is why we have not introduced these in Europe.
Perhaps in the future we will launch our Yamaha branded e-bikes, but I don’t want to rush that.”

Interesting take!
For sure the market is far more matured in EU and they just opened a new office in Netherlands to cater to the European OEMs.
I think Yamaha will do extremely well and they have partnered up with Haibike, Husqvarna, Giant etc.

What made you decide to move the OEM e-bike business to Europe at this moment?

“As sales manager for Yamaha France, I asked already in 1995 to start importing the now well-known PAS e-bikes as a pilot.
Subsequently, we took off to sell these in 1998 but the market was not ready at that time.
We have put in a lot of effort and even opened two pilot stores from which we learned that the consumers were open for this kind of new products."

Maybe this explains why only the PW-X2 motor has been used in the Yamaha bikes. There are 2 other motors that could’ve launched in the USA. Back in 2019 the ST motor could’ve been put into the Wabash and in 2020 the PW-X2-45 could’ve been put into the Cevante (the PW-X2 is already being used by Giant in the E+Pro road bike that was just launched in December).
