if you order parts by mail maybe you're going to wait a bit.

I’m not really one to be paranoid but you have your address right there! 😮

ya it could have been years instead of months.
I have never got a Kinekt 2.1 seat-post sent to me by Cirrus Cycles via USPS from the state of Washington. When I filed a complaint with them, they asked their Swiss dealer to send a replacement to me (by Swiss Post). I got the replacement after 1 month from the shipment date. Now, one year after my order, Cirrus Cycles received the original shipment, returned to them by the Polish Customs :D

Cato the Censor used to finish any of his speeches with: "Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam" ("Furthermore, I consider that Carthage must be destroyed"). My private version is:

"Furthermore, I consider that any national postal service must be destroyed" :D USPS, Swiss Post, or Poczta Polska deserve the same fate.

I've seen things shipped from California to me in NH sit in a USPS warehouse for a week or so. Add to that normal ground travel time. The online tracking information is pretty flaky when things are sitting on a truck waiting to be processed. There are a number of USPS processing plants known for being parcel death traps, such as Springfield MA.

I've also had things get to Springfield only to be sent out in the wrong direction, such as to CT before turning around, coming back through Springfield (and sitting for more days) before making the short journey (only about 60 miles) up to me in NH.

Very sad...

This is a complex issue here in the U.S. of A. Having a private entity in charge of our mail (especially in an election year) has a whole lot of concerns for me.
Generally, the problems getting things right now is not the fault of the USPS, it’s the manufacturers and overseas shipping issues in conjunction with limited trucking availability.

While I certainly wouldn't be considered some sort of postal cheerleader I will point out that not all national postal services are always a problem. I ordered an ebike kit a few weeks ago (various small parts and a pre built wheel so it was a substantial 25+lb box) from Vancouver that was shipped by Canada Post ground service (the cheapest mode and ~5500km by road to me). It was originally scheduled to take 2 weeks (fairly normal padding of additional time due to Covid era restrictions) ... the package arrived in 6 days.

On time or earlier is my general experience with Canada Post. It was much the same experience with USPS when I lived in the US 10+ years ago. I've participated in many many 100s of shipments (to and from) using either of the national postal systems. I've never had a lost shipment, I have had a few go on a temporary sabbatical within a few sorting centers and travel on the wrong truck ... but were always trackable, and eventually showed up. For me the biggest shipping problems have always been with government customs services (aka the black hole), not the shipping companies.

I certainly would not want to lose the option of a national postal service. Private courier options are expensive (often almost double on the cheapest options) and in my experience generally not any better in terms of quality (lost, late, or damaged items).
