Hello everyone, joined this forum for advice and read others issues. I got a Halfords brand Carrera Cross City, had it for around 1 and 1/2 years. The led control (possibly 790 model) seems to have malfunctioned. When I power it on the battery level leds flash and then the assist level LEDs flash and they alternate like this a few times before the control switches off. I checked connectors and they all seem to be in place. I also noticed a slight whirling noise coming from it for the duration it is on. I have charged the battery but still does not make a difference. Grateful if you ebike specialist have advice what could be wrong.

Welcome to the site. this sort of problem gets more experienced views if posted under the maintenance threads below in the advanced topics. You could also check for a brand forum for your brand.
You need to check with a voltmeter that the voltage from battery to controller is above the minimum at all times. The maximum voltage shown on the charger will tell you what voltage battery you have, and the minimum voltage. If voltage is fine, some controllers will flash strangely when a sensor fails. The ones near the bottom rail can be damaged by impact with obstructions, sticks etc. These are rather inexpensive. I diagnose them by replacing them if there is no visible damage.
If new sensors do not help, and the voltage is good, then a new controller may solve the problem. I buy generic controllers off ebay, however my mount is not brand specific so I can adjust it. If the controller is inside the downtube or similar, paying the premium price for one from the original manufacturer may be necessary.

Take it to Halfords, they should be able to diagnose the problem and source replacement parts. The Halfords warranty on electrical components differs between 1-2 years depending on the brand, but all batteries are covered for up to 2 years, they do say not to repair yourself but to take it to Halfords for an assessment. https://www.halfords.com/bikes/services/lifetime-guarantee.html

Hello, thanks for the advice. I took it to Halfords and they said the fault could either be the ECU (£75) or the wire looming which is more complicated and they would need to try to source from manufacturer ! Will go for ECU and hour that reduces the issue.

Thank you, will try using a volt meter to rule out the battery issues, although Halfords did look at the flashing led fault code and said it could be the ECU or looming.

Halfords may be one of the few UK retailers who can source the parts. Assuming your bike has the SR Suntour Hesc system.

If you have been to the dealer, follow their advice. L75 for a direct fit controller is not a bad price.
