I was coming up to a stop on my Aventure, getting ready to pull out into the road. I had to stop fast, due to a car coming , not going fast. I was off balance and my foot was on high side of pedal with bike falling . I tried to get my food down as I was starting to fall. My ankle folded. I thought I broke it. Hopefully just a very bad sprain.
My chain was jammed. Couldn't walk. Stand to fix it. 5 miles from home.
Positive side ,having a throttle came in very handy today. Rode home in moped mode. I would like to have a nice mid drive, but in this situation I would have been possibly stranded,Injured on a mid drive
A little frustrating. I'm 70 yrs old,. But Im not feeble. Im 6 '1 , 250 LBS. ,still in pretty good shape for my age.. I rode 58 miles this week,.So far. This is why I quit riding a 700 lb. Harley. But dropped a 70 lb bike at a stop and hurt my ankle. Back riding bike soon.

As long as its Bafang and/ or a China, internet bike with no local support in Ga. I'm leaning more toward Bosh , class 3 possibly, if I could afford it. But pricey. , esp for class 3. I'm very interested in a bike with good vendor and LBS support. So far my bike is doing good, but I'm not very pleased with Aventons current idea of support. I'm also interested in torque drive.

A couple of contradictions from your first post, so I'm confused. Why even look for Bosch power when your first post was about being saved by a throttle? I'm confused. In case you want to do internet searches, it's called a torque sensor, not a torque drive. I turned 69 today, and feeble hasn't even entered my mind. I do around 3,000 miles a year, passed a total accumulated 14,000 eBike miles a month ago.

Wrong wording and got off on a separate topic. I've just started back doing some biking, after years. Dont have lots of time and can't go as far as I would like.. I am a caregiver, only child for a 93 yr old parent also for 10 yrs now.i have to make.my time, exercise count. Your correct torque sensor. Your doing great on miles, esp at 69.

Oh no Jbiker, heal fast! .
Seems like a fair percentage of ebike crashes occur while stopped or at super slow speeds. I’m thinking the heavier weigh of ebikes doesn’t help. For me, if the bike gets more than 20% beyond vertical, it’s going down! And taking me with it.
Hope your ankle feels better.

You can buy a mid drive with a throttle.
A mid-drive with a throttle requires a functional chain to propel the bike. A hub drive with a throttle does not.

you can ride a mid drive with one leg. my bosch powered bike had a cranked crank and I rode it with full assist and at most my leg on the cranked crank using it to just get the crank around. it was pretty sloppy and I did not get a workout but it was better then riding the bus.

Update. More serious than I hoped
My ankle has a break and a fracture. I collecy edand had ankle new repair hardware installed. Got home 2 days ago. Happy 70th birthday to me
So I will be sidelined recovering. Just checking for other seniors who may have had similar problems and info on recovery and protection.. How best to protect the ankles , recommended ankle braces? 95,% of my riding is on pavement lanes. 45 mph traffic. No bike lanes here.

Next time you could break a collar bone. There you need to wear a collar bone brace? Any time you ride something that defies gravity, you are open for injury and broken bones. Thankfully we don't die as often as motorcycle riders, but there are around 45,000-50,000 bicycle accidents a year in the United States.

This is one of] the things that's frustrating . I rode a .motorcycle 30 pls yrs. Only got skint a couple of times. Got rid of .my 700 lb Harley, got hurt on 70 lb ebike in 3 mon ths. In some ways I feel more exposed on a bike. But my question was more about ankle protection.. thks.

Have a chat to your ortho and physio re ankle braces / protection - the decision depends on what hardware is in place , what condition your other bones / joints are in, plus how well you rehab from this injury.

Personally, I don't wear ankle protection on the bike despite having always worn it on motorbikes . My ruding style needs full ankle mobility, so it's a primary crash prevention priority vs secondary injury decision. Plus I dread having a tib / fib fracture.

Nb I do wear mtb shoes with impact protection and reasonably stiff soles to reduce foot njuries (5 crushed bones under my guzzi taught me that....) . My next pair might be higher cut - there are reasonably good options now with ankle impact protection but not much range of movement restriction.

Recovery? It goes on and on with a setback. After surgery and 4 months recovery, my fibula still hasn't healed properly, going back for more surgery. I am 70 yrs old and hoping to be able to ride after I recover. I. A little hesitant after being laid up probably for at least 7 months. I am curious about who had this type of injury and is back riding. Do you use anything to protect the old injury. Fibula, ankle in my case.
I was considering .a ankle brace. A couple of things mentioned were higher top boots or mtb shoes. Mtb shoes might work if and after I recover and get past recovery the swelling. Obviously my priorities are being able to walk. Drive my car, right foot, then possibly ride my bike.

That sucks your recovery has been bad, sorry you are going through that

I never thought about ankle protection etc but seems like a good idea

Keep us up to date on what you find

think i may get a pair of five ten mid pro, look like they would be good for the kind of riding i do

Sorry to hear about the setback in your recovery. A recumbent exercise bike might be an option when you are further along in your rehab.
