Exess eBike CAN be Shipped to the USA!

Following-up on a previous discussion, elsewhere -- I contacted the company directly.
Rumor had it they refused to ship to the USA.

THIS is the eBike we were discussing -- possibly, the most-beautiful one I came across in my research, so far:

I just had to check directly with this company about why they would not ship here.
The problem are the batteries -- but they offered a solution.
I'm NOT saying this is affordable. But you DO have another choice, now.

Here are my results, so far...
Answer from the company, direct - as of October 14, 2018:

" The problem [with shipping to the US] is the battery. it is almost impossible to ship li-ion batteries, anymore, due to them being rated as "dangerous goods". We could ship the bike only (without battery) and the customers in the US would have to buy the battery from Luna Cycle for example. They use the same battery as we do. I will send you pricing - without tax, of course. We would not collect tax here. You might have to pay a Customs Fee.

How are other bike companies and dealers able to ship all around the world, and they find it almost impossible? Something's not right there.

Holy smokes. I contacted Excess twice and had multiple emails regarding why they couldn't/wouldn't ship to the US. I even explored buying the bike via a friend in Europe and shipping it myself, but it became a hassle and I gave up.

Would have bought that bike in a heartbeat had they said they'd have sold the bike sans battery. I've bought stuff from Luna before. Sigh.

From some other Forums, it sounds like they've been doing it this way for awhile -- but through certain dealers Stateside. I do not know who that might be. They are redesigning for 2019 models, due out in the Spring. Maybe this is the beginning of how they need to get around a hassle for them. It's true that other companies have no real issues shipping bikes with batteries. Maybe restrictions in Germany compound this for them, as an export. I have no idea. I was fully expecting them to politely say "No, we cannot ship to the US." But I thought it never hurts to ask. Again. Of course, this is a moot subject for me, since I could never afford this. I just admire the beauty of the design.

They told me they might sell in the US in 2019, but in the fast-evolving ebike world, that's forever, and I went elsewhere.

Be interested in the price. I might still dig into my wallet. Decisions...

Bulls,Haibike, Riese and Muller, Ruff, etc... don't seem to have any trouble shipping batteries from Germany. Pretty sure that is not the issue.

I will post the pricing as soon as I receive it on Monday. You may want to await the Spring 2019 redesign. It gives you some time to decide. This is the main reason I posted this -- in case anyone had an interest. That frame and bike look almost fluid, to me. Not sure if it performs any better, but they appear to be racing-oriented (based on their other website).

As to the issue of the battery shipment -- I can only repeat what was explained to me. Not sure who the gentleman is, or his position within the company. If he comes back with a negative response, or a different reason, I will post it -- but I would not get too hung-up on this. It is what it is. Just sayin'... I doubt they have a nefarious reason for blocking shipments to the USA. One guy there might be saying "Oh, it's the batteries!" -- and another might be saying "Nope. We just don't like Americans!"

Here's a thought -- just a guess... I wonder if it has to do with Air Freight vs. Ship Container? Most of the other companies are shipping containers full of bikes by sea. Exess might be thinking they would send only one by air to a specific buyer. Li-Ion does not seem to be allowed on airplanes. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not sure if you estimated this without their battery. But then you must add back in the one from Luna. Unless, of course, they come back with a different story on Monday. I'm just excited that the people who have lusted after this might actually be able to get one. We'll know soon enough. Therte seem to be several cool components on this -- NOT that I know what I'm talking about. And it weighs only 57lbs. The Juggernaut I ordered comes in at 65lbs.

Scarecrow-Thanks for sharing! Looks like they may be competing with the TQ motor on the Flyon with all of that torque up front. Little pricey but very cool bike.

I received the pricing today...
Straight from the horse's mouth...

" The bike without battery and charger is 4,490 Euro (USD $5,180). Plus $860 for Shipping (but we are searching for a better rate).

The frame kit only is 1,690 Euro (USD $1,950).

You can buy the Battery and Charger from Luna as they use the same one as we do.

I did not realize the Frame Kit was even an option. And I checked with Luna: $600 for their 52V Wolf, plus $99 for their 52V Charger (on sale). Total seems to be, roughly: $6,740 -- not counting Shipping Costs from Luna. Way beyond my willingness -- but your wallet mileage may vary! Note: I am only guessing at which Luna battery and charger matches. You will need to ask.

Oh, and I got an answer on the reasaon for NOT wanting to ship the Battery. They did not design these for the US Market. Here's the explanation from Jurgen Schulz:

Very nice looking bike and can't help but like the carbon & ultra motor combination. I'm just wondering how many people interested in this bike would ride it primarily as a single track / off-road ebike which some of the other tops brands may have the geometry better dialed in for. I just think as a commuter bike this is very much overkill but still cool if you have the extra money.

The overall geometry - short head tube, slack front, short chain stays, etc. and the long travel and knobby tires make a clear intent statement of being an enthusiast mountain bike. To get everything right with the geometry for that market is very challenging these days. I could still see converting this to a nice commuting ebike by raising the bars about 4" and adding swept backed bars to allow a more upright and comfortable riding position (also improves forward visibility while riding which keeps you safe as a commuter), swapping out the tires to say something like the Schwalbe Moto Xs or Kenda Kwicks. I also want a rear rack but that is not so easy on a full suspension bike but at minimum a fender on the rear to prevent backside splashing on clothing (front fenders really don't see to do a good job of anything in my opinion - they don't keep your feet dry and water still seems to come off the front of the fender and up into the air you ride into - this would be a great thing to see someone actually solve).

It's a beautiful bike for sure and interesting to see the Bafang Ultra utilized on a high end bike like this when it's essentially non-compliant with regulations in Europe and the US (not that I think the regulations make any sense at all .... always a hot forum subject).
