Dog walking/running connectors that attach doggie-to-bicycle

Hi all,

My son has a dog-walking job, and methinks doggie might do with a run (and my son is not going to run anywhere any time soon). Years ago when I had a large dog who liked a good run, I used to have a dog-walking-attachment that attached to the rear area of my bike, and would cycle around on my conventional bike making my energetic, goofy dog very very happy. I looked online to see what kind of things are out there, and see many things that attach to seatposts. I wonder ... won't the leash bump into the cyclist's leg?

Do any of you have experience with these?

Of course, we know that the doggie won't be able to run fast, so will keep the ebike at a low speed, and start with short distances. ;)

Thanks in advance for any experiences you have to share!

I had no problem with a vigorous 65 pound husky/lab with 130 pound me on my Giant hybrid... in the mid 1990's. Not a wobble. It worked great and had a spring mechanism on it also. There was no way the dog could interfere with the cyclist. Loved it! So, am looking for something similar .... I'll take a look at your link, @erider_61 ! :)

Okay, looked! Yes, #7 is a kick! I also see the one I used back in the mid 1990's, the "Springer." Thanks for the link, @erider_61 ! I'll also hope that some folks with experience with some of these chime in also.

Boy I don't know about this. I too have a Giant Hybrid and once rode with my big German Shepherd on a leash. She was great but I never got past the possibility that she would suddenly run in front of the bike and cause a serious accident. Having her tied up behind me where I could not even see here is something I'd be wary of trying.

I walk 2 dogs (one is 22 lbs, the other 50 or so ) every morning 7 days a week 365 days a year, and have been for years. With that experience, my vote would be having them attached to a bike is a bad idea, for the dog's health, and the rider's. In a perfect world I'm sure it would work fine, but in the world I live in, something as simple as a sign post, with you riding on one side of it, and the dog on the other, is going to lead to dire consequences for you or your pet. That's just one scenario where I can see issues. I'm pretty sure there are many others. Like a rabbit (or a cat!) jumping out of the bushes as you pass......

It works great with the proper connector. Safe and stable. I was simply trying to figure out what folks’ experience was with different connectors.... you are absolutely right that it is completely unsafe to ride a bike with a dog on a leash. That is why these great contraptions exist! The one I used to use was developed by the police department in the Netherlands. I discovered it is still for sale – it’s called “the Springer”

Not familiar. How does it work? Does it release the dog, or the bike, in an incident where each of you are on opposite sides of a sign post, or the dog decides it's time to chase a rabbit/squirrel/cat that crosses his path?

I'd like to get one also. I had a golden retriever and a lab that figured out how to behave and I could just hold the leash and ride. Not so with the 23 pound demon dog I have now. I had a wreck doing this with her. I will say that the cause left a brown streak on the pavement and sent me into a yard. A soft yard. I haven't done that since.

About a month ago, I got "pulled over" by the dog cop for letting the demon dog chase me in a deserted park. A taser collar is not a leash, I learned. Living in town can be difficult.

Yes! And squirrel chasing is not a problem.

My dogs seem to figure out that squirrels, rabbits, grouse, grasshoppers, are not to be chased whilst doing the bike thing. I even think the Demon Dog will get that part. It was the "Gotta Poop NOW" that caused the wreck, and the brown skid mark on the road. Speaking of, the Demon better go on a walk now.

Not for me. If this device releases the dog, there's nothing to keep a distracted dog (even temporarily distracted one wondering what just happened) from dashing out into a busy road for instance.

I never had any issues riding on ordinary suburban streets. I avoided any areas where it would be possible for Katie to get hung up and auto-released. Katie was quite the runner, so we were very careful not to let her out. She loved cycling with me. I used a gym that was a couple miles from my house and she'd go to and from the gym with me ... and wait while I did my stuff at the gym, watching me through the window. Nice memories!

Of course, not for everyone ... just exploring possibilities and what's out there these days in terms of these sorts of contraptions. I wish I'd kept it. I have no idea where it is ... we started having much smaller dogs, so it wasn't relevant to our lives any more.

I ordered a Springer and it is here in a box. Guess I need to buy a dog harness and do some assembly then (shudder) try it out.

It was the "Gotta Poop NOW" that caused the wreck,

One of the bike attachment web pages said that running has a laxative effect on dogs, so part of the acclimating process is to provide frequent potty breaks at first. The page said the dog might stop suddenly to poop if not used to going for a run. I never would have guessed that!!!

Oh no doubt. When I take my Shepherd to the field behind our house to play Frisbee by the second throw she is squatting. LOL

When we had our wreck a couple years ago, I thought she was empty as I'd been riding with her running around in the woods for an hour or two. I had to leash her up to go on the county road, and found out that she was not empty. In fact, I was going faster than usual thinking it was "safe". Who knows what goes on in the minds of dogs?

A dog teathered to a bicycle is a disaster waiting to happen!!!! I witnessed a crash in a campground where a gentleman was riding on the road with a dog on a leash held by one hand while on the bike. The dog moved one way or the other didn't see it but when I heard the noise and looked he was going down and hard and got scraped up bad, and the dog was loose. After seeing this happen I decided it is not a good idea, to many variables that can make a dog pull, stop, lunge, whatever and throw the rider off balance. A trailer would most likely be ok.
