Controller recommendation

I'll start off with what I have and then I'll go into what my issue is maybe somebody can give me a good recommendation for my wifes bike.
China bought bike
  • 48 volt
  • bafang 750 watt gear hub with the 3 wire plug
  • 1 to 5 wire harness the 5th wire is for the light but also as it seams makes getting a controller with the 9 pin plug instead of the 8 more difficult
The controller that came with this bike (DMHC 18A) went bad so I contacted the manufacture in China and bought a replacement controller but also had to switch to the waterproof one to five wire harness that forced me to change out the brake handles, throttle, light. I didn't put up much of a fight because I really did like the idea of switching from all the individual wires to this one nice waterproof harness. So if push came to shove, I could put my original hardware all back on and go to the original individual plugs. Not really a preferred direction.
So now I have the new controller ( DC moto controller by lithium battery 25A 1-4.2 Volt dual mode) and it works but my wife absolutely hates it. On slow start. it is not consistent at all, on regular start it wants to knock you off the back of the bike it takes off so hard. She also rides it on PAS and it goes 13 miles an hour. I need to find a controller that I can set what the PAS is to slow it down. Right now I'm leaning towards a KT controller with the LCD3 screen. Problem I'm having is finding one that is compatible with the one to five wire harness.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Also, are these cadence sensored bikes? or torque sensored?
It is the JS 26. And you are correct the controller does fit in the frame however if there is a better controller that is recommended that doesn't fit in the frame I will just add a waterproof box to the backside. My wife would rather it fit in the frame, but at this point getting a controller that she actually will enjoy riding her bike again is what the goal is. I have messed around with a lot of the settings on the current controller but I cannot find one that is similar to the KT C14 setting which reduces the PAS power level.

she liked the bike with the original controller, however it burned up and they could not offer me a direct replacement. It is quite a bit smaller than the replacement controller as I noted earlier at 18 amps.

Does your motor connector look like this? That's got three big pins, but there are six snaller ones around it that are hard to see.

The other type of motor connector is the smaller 9 pin, Sorry, someone, not me, melted this one, which is why they use the first one on true 750W bafang motors. Knowing which connector you use is the first step in choosing a connector,

If you choose a KT, you'll have to get a big one to support the first connector,

I think it's a bit difficult to give you any advice without knowing your new/old controller specs.
Did your controller have sinewave or squarewave?

If amperage was the problem, I don't know why turning it down wouldn't help.
Sounds like your controller is tuned to give you too much power even at low level.

Even if I suggest you the controller, there's no guarantee that it would fit on your bike. As many ebike companies use different connectors for batteries, brake inhibitor, display, etc.

Although Higo/Julet connectors are the most common ones, they still use different pins (2 pin, 3 pin, etc.)
I'm not overly concerned with battery connectors more concerned with the Juliette connectors. Finding KT controller or other that actually works with them. I know they do sell KT controllers with the new waterproof harness is I just haven't found any they have the 3 pin battery and the 9 pin 1 to 5 wire harness connector. As far as it being a sinewave or square wave I really don't know manufacturer couldn't tell me but as I understand it I can switch over to a sinewave and it will be better than the square wave.
I will have to review all the custom settings on this new controller see if I can find something that allows me to turn down the overall power of the controller maybe that will help PAS speed. The new controller does say dual mode for speed set. Not sure what that means?
One more reason for changing controllers is that she hates the screen. It is a colored screen that is almost impossible to see in the sun. I have a 1000W bike with the SW900 screen and that is more what she wants.

It has the connector like your first picture with the three posts. Can I use 1000 Watt controller on a 750?

Yes a 1000w controller on a 750 motor isn't that much of a strain on the components.
The issue is , as always, finding a controller that has the same wiring connectors as the old set up. You may have to bite the bullet and watch a few youtube vids to undertake switching the connectors. Personally I would never want to do such a tedious task. Simpler to just buy a new kit for me.

I wouldn't worry about the lite connector you can leave it blank and just hard wire it or get a battery operated one. Once you go from 500-750 w controllers you will have to use the apparent 3 pin motor connectors due to the increased amp (that's in a KT).

One thing you said, you have parameters you can set in your controller, in that case there very might well be a parameter to reduce the take off juice on PAS and throttle.

Good luck

The problem I have with soft start is that the throttle is also delayed. So when you come across an unexpected hill you hit the throttle and it doesn't kick on until you're already at the bottom of the hill and you've lost all your momentum. It would be nice if you had a delay with paddle pasc but the throttle was instant. Also with this controller it gives you 100% wattage to get you to 13 mph and then dies off. Literally almost spins the rear wheel to get you to that 13 mile an hour on PAS1. Is that a characteristic of square wave and would a sine-wave controller eliminate that?

If you're looking for a one with Z916 connector, here..

This one is 48V 25A though. Also note that they added a fin for cooling. So the dimension will be a little different.
Does this controller work with the 1 to 5 wire harness? Jes2020 said to go forgo the light. The problem would be that the harness I have will not work unless the controller has the Higo/Julet connector 9 pin connector. The 8 pin will not plug into a 9 plug connector.

Here's a 30A KT controller selling on ebay, with the Z916 motor cable and the dreaded 8 pin connector for a 1-4 Julette handlebar harness.
3-A KT.jpg

And you solve the cable problem by buying a new 1-4 extension cable, which has 8 pins. Topebikekit sells them, and I've had no problem buying from them using paypal. I suppose you might even find the 1-4 cable on ebay.

And you get 30 amps that you can fiddle the C5 setting all the way down to 15A if you want.,. I believe it affects PAS only. not throttle.

Also what do you mean by 9 pin connector? Z910?
No I have the Z916 motor connector. The other connector that runs through the frame and connects the the screen, brake handles, throttle, Light. The harness has an extra pin that works the light. It is at the 12 oclock position. The picture is on the controler side. I cannot get enough light in the other end for the picture. I guess I can always ditch the cable I have and swap it for a 1 to 4.

But one concern is that, your new 25A controller and Eunorau's 25A controller are both Bafang.

If you didn't like the characteristics of your 25A controller, I just don't know if they are any different in terms of characteristics of power delivery.
It looks like I am going to switch to the KT system. Looking for a controller and Screen brought up a couple questions.
  1. Can you run a Sine controller with a geared hub? The 12 Mosfet Sine wave Controller I was looking at said they would not work with geared hub which mine is.
  2. Is there an issue seeing the colored LCD8 screen in the light? The colored screen I have is impossible to see in the sun even with the brightness turned all the way up.
Thank you

I have several ebikes conversions, all geared hub motors, I run them all on KT sine wave controllers. Most of the motors have built in speed sensors integrated with the 9 pin connector. I blew out one internal speed sensor, so I bypassed it with an external unit. I only use mono displays. I own too many ebikes to splurge on color. Most of my controllers are 20A, but I do have two 25A models.

Do you know if your current motor uses Hall sensors? Some motors, and this includes Bafang, are sensorless, so you need a sensorless controller, and I think these are all square wave. Perhaps your seller knows you have this situation. However, there is no reason a sinewave controller cannot run a geared hub, unless it has no speed sensor support. EVen them, it can run the motor, but can't report the speed when the motor is coasting,

I have a Bafang 750 geared motor with the 3 pin connector. I will have to decide the importance between running a sine wave or having coast speed.

I know this is an older post but I have either an AV or AW conversion kit with 1000w and 25 or 26w current and only a booster of 1:1 on my sun fat tire trike and this controller looks pretty close to the one that I have and it would be nice to get a waterproof one. Is booster something like gears? I get about 27 - 28 mph on the flat and reached 36 mph downhill so fast enough for me. I built it myself and wow the comments I get all the time on it are pretty awesome. I know I had a battery issue where it would just shut down. I would have to unplug the battery and plug it back in so I contacted a Btr battery seller and they sent me an upgrade to a 30Ah 48v and which was a giant upgrade from the 17.5Ah one I still have the other just need a BMS chip for it kinda hard with it in Chinese language anyone knows how to get one the battery is still holding about 52v and I am not comfortable with running it without the BMS chip any help with that I would be grateful. The funny thing is when I contacted the seller of the kit they put up such a gripe about me using it on a trike they really are kinda out there in their trike thinking. cause they did not lift a finger to even point me in the direction of how to get a replacement controller. I see their issue is you can carry a lot of weight but I only got a whole 140 lbs on me mostly riding the 10 or 12 blocks around town and on log runs ya there are some hills but I shift her into first really no issues so far but the battery issue kinda changed the system a bit and I just want to replace the controller to be safe, there was some pretty hard arcing when plugging in the XT90 plugs now I have the large grey Anderson plugs and they work so much better. So thanks for posting the eBay ad so I can get a new controller I hope yours worked out alright for ya. Here is a pic of my Trike
