I think Ford got it right! Certainly, a better solution for my situation. The eBikes will be very convenient and inexpensive($1300 to $3000). Notice the low power (200W, 9Ah) is to reduce cost and weight, rather than a thoughtless solution. However, the 48V systems provide strong power.
Think Ford volume. Millions of sub-$1000 ebikes. Ford wants to see more cars, not profit from bikes. Ford can afFord to pass them along at cost, if it sells more cars.
Court says they ride like a regular bike. The external bottom bracket is a key diff. to compensate for the smaller frame ride. I am sure other features can be added to provide a more natural pedaling feel.

Ford first announced Ford Smart Mobility and an initial 25 experiments designed to anticipate what customers will want and need in tomorrow’s transportation ecosystem at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. There are now experiments in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and South America. These experiments include:
