Battery type

Is there a universal battery that is used by several brands or are all battery packs proprietary? I don't want to buy a ebike ,and then a year later they are out of business and I can't buy a replacement battery. Thanks

Not that I know of. Good luck with that search.

My advice to anyone is to keep in mind that you may need support so if you have local dealers for the bikes you’re interested in, that’s a good way to whittle down the possibilities. As far as types, just ask yourself what kind of riding you like to do or might potentially do.
I ended up with a Trek Allant+7 because I wanted a name brand I had good past (analog) experience with and there’s a local dealer. After that it was a matter of my preference for riding on paved and lighter gravel/dirt trails. Oh and I have a bum shoulder so a front suspension fork was a must.

While there isn't a universal standard, many of the direct-to-consumer brands with hub drives use off the shelf setups. The Reention Dorado is a popular battery for many of these brands (usually in one of two lengths).

Bikes with mid-drive motors like Shimano, Bosch etc., will probably be supported for a long time, meaning you can order a replacement battery even after a few years.

There's also many 3rd party "battery repacking" services out there, where you can get the existing case rebuilt with new cells.

It looks I own two Reention Pro batteries, only branded by the e-bike manufacturer. Thank you for the information!

Thanks. I don’t want to end up with a bike and no new battery available in a few years.
I'd suggest narrowing down your list of e-bikes based off of other criteria without worrying about battery compatibility first.

Once you've done that, and post in this thread, I'm sure people will be able to give you more guidance.

Yeah, I did a semi-deep dive on batteries when I was considering a Surface604 as a second e-bike, but they had surprisingly low battery capacity for the price.

There's a fairly extensive thread regarding them in the Surface 604 forum, though it's applicable to other e-bike brands as well...

Reention is a case maker. Find a bike that uses Reention cases and a later upgrade or replacement is an easy find. Reention does not build and sell completed battery packs.
