I remember some spectacular crashes on my bike. Not Evel Knievel jumps -- but walking the bike to the top of a hill, way too steep to pedal up, turning around at the top, then pedaling as fast as I could to get up speed and just trying to stay on the road all the way down. Sometimes I did, sometimes I didn't. When I didn't, I probably should have been killed but I just got up and walked my bike back to the top and tried again.

This was over 50 years ago, but I've been back to that hill recently to refresh my memories, and I'm not exaggerating much at all. Oh, to have those younger bones again.

But yeah, I don't think helmets had been invented yet except for soldiers.

I think it was closed cell foam stitched into a leather covering. Back in those days I did a few criteriums and borrowed a used one from a bike shop. Luckily, I never found out how good or bad it was in a crash! Before this, guys just wore caps or nothing at all, even in the Tour de France.

Yea, I remember when everyone thought that the narrow 18-19mm tires were faster.

Yea, young riders may now understand why the current technology is called Clipless!

But, Why Are the Called Clipless Pedals?

There’s lots of talk out there about the benefits of clipless pedals, the different cleat styles, shoe options, dialing in your fit, etc… but if you’ve spent any time in a shop, on the support phones, or hanging out with a 5-year old, you know there’s one question that comes up every time...

I have some old sew-ups that are about that narrow. Haven’t used them since the mid-seventies. They’ve been wall decor in my garages since then

Not the best protection ever, but I´ve been tempted to get one cuz they just look cool, still available on ebay, but pricey.
