I think it was closed cell foam stitched into a leather covering. Back in those days I did a few criteriums and borrowed a used one from a bike shop. Luckily, I never found out how good or bad it was in a crash! Before this, guys just wore caps or nothing at all, even in the Tour de France. It look like something you have to blow up, like a pool floatie.

I have some old sew-ups that are about that narrow. Haven’t used them since the mid-seventies. They’ve been wall decor in my garages since thenThat's an excellent picture, Dallant. Check out the tires on those bikes.
Hey.I know that guy. Asked him how many fingers am I holding up? What year is this? Recite the alphabet?
Not the best protection ever, but I´ve been tempted to get one cuz they just look cool, still available on ebay, but pricey. It looks like something you have to blow up, like a pool floatie.
