Allant+8S any way to reduce max speed to 20mph?

Thinking of getting the Allant+8S. It is a Class 3 bike. Is there anyway using the Cobi hub app to set max speed for a particular ride to 20mph? we have a nice trail that allows class 1 bikes. Thanks.

How would you convince them though? If it says "8S" on it...then it implies the speed version. I would just ride respectfully. Unless you're in some area you know they police heavily? I feel like most people don't care in the US.

Put a sticker placed just right to hide the “s”

I would ask your Trek dealer’s service tech, though I doubt that option exists. It’s very rare we see someone on this forum want to restrict their ebike! I’d just ride responsibly and you should be fine.

I've asked as part of other discussions, here and elsewhere if anyone has actually seen enforcement of the class 1 restriction. No one has. And let's be practical. You'd need to be pretty reckless to ride above 20 on a busy trail/path, regardless of bike class or analog vs electric. And if it's empty enough to be comfortable at 20+, there will be no one to complain. I doubt you'd find someone at the side of the path with a radar gun stalking you.

Lord knows I’ve never been able to find any authority figures when I want to report idiots on the trails with dogs unleashed or families with kids all over the place filling up the entire trail, etc.

Or the bladers? Been 5 years since I left DC. No bike trails where I am now, just rugged snowmobile trails that are rough rail trails. Maybe blading has died out?

I actually saw a very attractive young woman blading on the trail Friday. First time I can remember seeing anyone on blades in years.

I think you will see more of restricting class 3 bikes due to more enforcement and poor supply of class 1 bikes. Untill supply catches up with demand, anyway. I'd just buy a class 1 sticker on the web...

I volunteered with a public trail for a short time.
As far as bike class goes, nobody really inspects a bike unless you do something wrong or have a wreck.
Bike speed is hard to prove unless the police are monitoring.
Be respectful and you shouldn't be questioned.

Are you doing this for you or someone else? You can't limit the speed to 20mph, even unassisted the bike isn't hard to pedal at 20+mph for a short distance. If you're worried about yourself, just limit it yourself by not riding as fast. I can limit my 8s to 10 mph or 5 mph. The software isn't a speed governor it's an assist cutoff.

Any case in court as to speed capabilities : Would have to be based on what the Bike is able to do not you . These regulations would be next to impossible to enforce on bikes that have no throttle . Other comments are correct . It's relatively easy to get a class one mid drive pedal assist past 20 mph.
After all I bought an ebike to keep up with 30 year olds on Roadies going well over 23mph on certain stretches . On regular bikes not e-bikes . I'm 65 and can get my generic Trek Dual Sport up to 20 mph/ Naturally I can't maintain it .
There may be people in govt that would try to enforce ticketing class 3 riders . I just can't see how it would hold up in court . It's like trying to make a law on how fast someone can fire a semi-auto rifle .
