I've had an airbag vest for a number of years for motorcycling after I totaled my machine going around a deer. Light, fits over anything. Horse riders use them too.

For cycling I wear my mesh jacket from my motorcycling days, lots of armor in all the right place, light, and (fairly) cool:

Pair that with the Hovding Airbag cycle helmet and feel really safe! It deploys when sensors located in the collar are triggered.
