2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Thank heaven, we finally got a day where the sun came out, the temp hit 50 degrees and the snow is gone, even the last couple inches that fell two days ago. Called my riding buddy and it was off to the Saratoga National Battlefield, closed for the winter to cars but plowed anyway, and today...

Wow, another killer ride, Rab! So, whaddaya think? 6500 for the year?? A nice good looking number! I learned a long time ago you never scroll past a RabH ride report. And some day, you’re going to have to have that Road e bronzed and turned into a statue!

Winter is coming: how do I protect the battery?

Damn, this thread led me to the past “Winter Is Coming - Biking In Cold Weather” thread in the Similar list below, and there’s good old Richard Friedman weighing in. I find it terribly sad that he isn’t with us anymore, but am happy to be reminded this way on occasion.

Winter is coming: how do I protect the battery?

That’s a standard trick in the Adirondacks a little north of us. A mechanic’s drop light and a blanket over the whole thing and you’re in business. People just pop the hood and toss one in overnight so the car will start when it’s 20 below in Malone or elsewhere.

Couple days of (badly needed) rain coming tonight, so I did a quick pavement ride on my new Stance mountain bike. This is a loop around a reservoir that climbs 500 feet in the first two miles just to wake you up, and then carries on from there. Mostly heavily wooded and very quiet. Camera can...

Advise needed on first time purchaser

Giant has the leftover Stance e+2 29ers on sale till mid December (I think) for $2460. I just bought one, and it is an outstanding bike. Excellent Yamaha motor and a wide enough range of gearing - 10 speed Deore, but with 36/46 low ratio it will climb anything - it’s a very nice package. My...

<<<She also mentioned something about riding up the side of a mountain which I really wasn’t prepared to hear>>> And those poor Creos are sitting in the garage back in Alberta wondering what happened! Amazing pictures of Mt Fuji, beautiful! What a trip.

Well, I can tell you that this Stance is a hell of a lot better than I am! I love a project, and learning to have enough confidence to actually use this thing for what it is intended is gonna be a good one. Taking it out in the Washington County gravel - and some woods stuff - tomorrow with one...

Your numbers on that bike are amazing, Rab! When it dies Giant should have it bronzed and give you a brand new one! I’ve been at it a year longer than you, apparently, and I’m 10,000 miles behind you, for crying out loud, and that’s across six bikes now! These exclamation points are fun! I...

It does, which I did not expect. It will be interesting to see how these two bikes settle in with each other, so to speak. On the one hand, how much pavement riding over miles am I going to do on it with the Creo sitting there, but on the other, why not? This one also has that automatic thing...

So here's the new member of the troupe out for its first ride today in Washington County, NY (borders Vermont and extremely beautiful for cycling). For the record it's a 2022 Giant Stance e+2 29er that has been in my local shop all along, and the only wonder is that I didn't buy it earlier. But...

Well, it ain’t Japan, but southern Vermont is always a great spot for a ride out under the trees, across the meadows, through the towns and UP and DOWN those hills! Foliage is just past peak where we were today, but it all looked great and the roads are just fantastic. Not so much gravel as good...

Turbo Creo 2 Comp E5 (aluminum) is out, is a Vado SL 2 next?

yeah, that’s a new one alright… cassette on the last ones here was 11-42.

Turbo Creo 2 Comp E5 (aluminum) is out, is a Vado SL 2 next?

I may be wrong here - it happens - but I believe any Revolt e+ bikes are a couple of years old. They have not been available in the US for maybe two years, and searching their website yields nothing. My LBS, Giant dealer, agrees. With that said though, in I believe in or around 2022 it seemed...

Twin Valley, those are some damn fine follow-ups to Prairie’s very bland and ordinary pictures… I’m tempted to just lean my bike up against a dumpster somewhere and post that after you guys. Can’t compete! There’s a wood bridge on the White Pass RR from Skagway that was pretty impressive as...

Drove over to my brother’s in New Hampshire yesterday for a little trip across some of the Northern Rail Trail. We started at the iconic Danbury Country Store and rode 23 miles back to his house at the east end of Lake Mascoma near Enfield. Flat as a table and with a very good hard packed...

EBR made me do it! (new Vado SL 5.0 EQ)

I always have that spare tube, wrapped up in some electrical tape in case I need some of that. Had to use it one time a year or so ago when I got enough of a gash that I couldn’t fix it with the usual tricks. Never leave home without it. Also keep a foot or so of electrical tape stuck to the...

For Specialized SL owners. Have you bought the bottle battery and is it helpful to you?

Jesus, that’s a good looking bike. Put some helicopter or other 3M tape under those straps on the bag so the paint doesn’t get worn there!
