2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

My old friend was supposed to stop at our house enroute to look at a sailboat, but he cancelled, as he usually does. I was going to take him to the Shipwreck Tavern, so instead I rode my Radster there, about 6 miles on back roads Was going to sit outside to keep an eye on the bike (not that...

    Rad January funding or close

You do realize you replied to a post from last year? Since then, the company went bankrupt, has been acquired as detailed in a later post in this thread, and appears to be operating; bikes and parts are still available.

How Often And How Long Are Class 3 E-Bikes Traveling At More Than 20 MPH?

All new cars are easily capable of exceeding the speed limit on any road they're likely to encounter.

How Often And How Long Are Class 3 E-Bikes Traveling At More Than 20 MPH?

My Radster works that way. In class 3 mode (user selectable 1,2,3) the throttle maxes out at 20mph, but if you pedal you still get assist up to 28mph. I like that... I rarely touch the throttle when moving, but it's nice for quickly accelerating across an intersection or starting out uphill.

How Often And How Long Are Class 3 E-Bikes Traveling At More Than 20 MPH?

I rarely go much over 21-22 mph on level ground. Downhill I'll go faster if appropriate, there's one hill near my house where I can reach 28 or more if I push it. On the mixed use trails around my home (mostly old woods roads) I'm rarely going more than 10-15.

    Remember Highway 61 Revisited?

This is our house's primary heat. Direct vent propane, 30K BTU, no fan. Our two back bedrooms each have a 7500 BTU wall mount direct vent propane heater, also needing no power. Between the three separate heaters the house stays warm in subzero (°F) temperatures and there's redundancy.

    Remember Highway 61 Revisited?

My direct vent heaters are propane (LP). I would not install a ventless heater in my house (fumes and moisture).

    Remember Highway 61 Revisited?

Abe said, "Man, you must be putting me on!" When the power goes out I just use my gas stove, which requires no power. Before that, when we had an electric stove, I'd just pull out one of my camping stoves. And a pourover Melitta cone filter, I won't stoop to instant coffee, tastes like crap...

concerns with ebikes laws and ways to improve them

Thing is, while manual bikes can reach 30mph or more, so few ordinary riders of manual bikes can maintain a high speed that it's never been a problem that the authorities needed to address. Ebikes make it easy for everybody to go fast, so now it's a problem that they don't know how to deal...

concerns with ebikes laws and ways to improve them

Air drag is proportional to the square of the airspeed, so if you're traveling twice as fast (whether you're actually going twice as fast or you're going, say, 10 mph into a 10 mph headwind) it's four times the air drag.

    Street Registration Question

I agree, but the discussion is still relevant. NJ is now requiring that true ebikes be registered and insured... but as a CT resident (no ebike registration in CT) who often visits NJ (bringing my ebike to get around the campground) I have no way to register it, and thus ride it legally in NJ.

Mother charged after son hits pedestrian

During the 1970s parents were purchasing minibikes for kids, either the cheap "frame bikes" with Briggs & Stratton engines or the fancier Honda 50 (and some, like me, mounted lawnmower engines to old pedal bikes with varying degress of success or safety ). The difference was, we all...

    LiFePO4 upgrade

Reminds me of the day many years ago when I rode my old Schwinn Continental to the package store with a backpack for a couple of six packs of beer. 🫤 As LiFePO4 batteries are bulkier and heavier, you could split the pack and put half of them in the original location on the downtube and half on...

    User Selectable E-Bike Class.

On my Radster, I don't think it can be switched while in motion. Class 1 disables the throttle, and class 2 works like you'd expect (throttle to 20 mph). In class 3, throttle will still take you to 20 mph but no more; to go any faster you have to pedal, and pedal assist cuts out at 28 mph...

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

Back then kids illegally rode minibikes on the street, kids will always push the limits, but most of them knew it was illegal and just scooted down the side street from their house to the trail as quick as possible, looking out for traffic (and cops). They weren't popping wheelies in the middle...

    Bike Modification

Those are the kind of modifications that are making states pass laws restricting electric bikes. If you want to go fast without pedaling, buy a motorcycle.
