    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

By the way, mine is a 14 Ah battery that gives me 40 - 50 miles. Just to give you an idea of the size of battery you might need to give the range you want

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

The Tongsheng comes with a 42t so I’d stick with that and see how you get on with the 18t rear. Means you can keep the chain too, although it will need shortening. I presume they’re not rod brakes? If so I’d strongly recommend Kool Stop Salmons too, much better stopping power. I wouldn’t worry...

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

Yes, rear cog size is important, but there’s only so far you can go before there’s too much torque going through the hub, I believe Sturmey Archer used to recommend no more than a 2:1 ratio, and that’s non electric. I’m back to a (standard) 18t rear with the 42t Tongsheng, which works fine for...

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

It’s fine 95% of the time - it’ll put out a lot more than 250w in short bursts. I’m about 80kg, and the bike and luggage must be pushing 35kg, and when it struggles on a hill I feel its more limited by the gearing (can’t spin the pedals fast enough) than the motor power. It’s honestly great - I...

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

Thank you! Yes the wiring was covered in silver expanding sleeving to match the brake and gear cables. I had to totally change the way the chain guard was attached, if I did it again I’d probably just use a Hebie chain glider. I’ve never done a tweed run, but I often cycle in tweeds in the...

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

Thanks! I drilled the frame for three rivnuts, it’s pretty secure as long as the battery is locked on the base. The leather straps are a little extra security

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

Thank you! I like them - they’re very non slip without being sticky, and seem less tiring than the rubberised cork I had on before. Yes the decals were from eBay, just to tie the whole thing together

    Converting old Raleigh 3 speed

I’ve converted a 3 speed Raleigh using a Tongsheng tsdz2. The conversion itself was pretty straightforward apart from refitting the chain guard. As others have mentioned, brakes become an issue so I changed to Dia compes and Kool Stops and it works great.
