Turning either or both of the screws all the way in or all the way out seems to make no difference, also pressing the little lever on the clamp doesn't seem to actuate anything. Any suggestions?

Yes they are, those screws are what I meant by when I was talking about the adjustment in my first post. Last time I'm pretty sure backed them out as far as they will go but the clamp still comes undone. I'll give it another go and report back
