    thanks a bunch. it was the sensor plate -- it'd slipped too far away from the sensor proper to be read. i snugged it back up close, and the bike is perfect. the plate does seem to be held in place only by friction, however. maybe a screw or some such fell out. will post on the e-joe forum...
