Semi-solid state batteries are coming to the e-bike industry – and for real this time

strange, none of those are really major benefits to me - i’ve never had a well cared for battery die from cycles, have to be replaced, explode, etc. and i don’t ride in a cold climate, but less weight per kwh would be a HUGE benefit!

Anyone converted their Turbo Vado to tubeless tires?

I use the airshot. small, light, silent (no moving parts!) and it has never not seated a tubeless tire for me. it’s a little scary opening the valve and hearing the BANG POP BANG of the instant inflation and seating, but works every time, at least on my modern tires and rims. i never clean old...

    Anybody tried Clik tire valves?

i don't even use the covers. no need. it's amazingly satisfying to just stick the inflator on (no unscrewing anything), click, push button. ditto my floor pump, no unscrewing, no lever, just click, pump! that said, i do have a complaint about the valve cores themselves. you can't put a core...

    The transition

the people i’ve known who work in agriculture don’t drive 120 miles a day to and from their jobs. i don’t know how accurate the statistics are but supposedly the average for ag workers is 32 miles - and they make up something like 1% of the workforce these days. not sure where the 20% of the...

Unpopular opinion: the DYU A5 proves e-bikes have killed traditional commuting bikes for me

same, people see what they want to see, or what their own attitudes encourage or suggest about others.

    The transition

a lot of places seem cheap to live … then a young adult discovers they need a car and to drive 100 miles a day for a job. $20 a day in gas, about the same in insurance and lease payments, that $1200/mo is the difference between their cheap place to live and a decent place near transit in a...

    The transition

IMO those are crazy choices to be making except in very special circumstances. 100+ miles a day, whether electric or gas or diesel is just not necessary. there are other places to live and work and while it’s easier to say that as a professional of some means, there are both cheap and expensive...

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

i have to say … as an american, i simply do not understand the “teams.” countries, i understand, olympics, world cup companies that make the equipment and sell related equipment in the world, i get, e.g. f1 universities, colleges, i get franchises associated with a city or state, i get a...

Do cell phone holders damage phones?

for a while i used a iphone mini that i got just for riding, because it was smaller and lighter than my main phone, while still staying completely connected to everything with all the apps and other features i wanted. of course you have to pay for service to make this really worthwhile, wifi...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

yes, that's what i mean. you can add the calorie field or any other to any of the in-ride dashboards/screens that you want to. since "average watts" is already calculated there's no fancy math needed, just multiply moving time by average watts. it would be kind of sad to watch calories tick up...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

ah ! rider energy! the one i use will show calories, workout load, intensity, etc. calories is basically total energy, easily converted to wH but it uses the kCal unit. it also shows average watts and elapsed time, which is even easier math and doesn’t rely on the “efficiency” factor. a cool...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

doubt it most show wh of battery, so you just look at the beginning and do the math? i take a screen shot of the battery screen before and after each ride, just to have my own record of wh used when looking at rides in strava and so on

California tries to limit to 250 watt???

this is the inevitable result of the "we don't want any (even reasonable) regulations on ebikes, personal responsibility and enforcement will be enough" crowd. enforcement is very hard without licensing and insurance and registration, and you can basically buy anything you want at this point...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

this is interesting, and similar to the way mahle’s x20 bottom bracket torque sensor works. unfortunately it’s very inaccurate on those bikes, i wonder if the TQ version is better! it’s a very minimal and cost effective approach.

Riese & Müller Withdraws From US

r+m made this decision in february. the exemption on bikes was announced in april, by which point they'd likely already pretty much wound things down. elections matter.

California Assembly member proposes driver's license for e-bikes

kids have been riding on public roads for 100 years on UNPOWERED bikes. maximum speeds reached on level ground are closer to 10mph than 28mph. the risks are completely different and the results of the last few years in places where kids ride ebikes have validated what ought to have been common...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

all reports seem to say that’s it’s totally like a regular road bike above the cutoff or when turned off. it has one of the two clutches or freewheels that a typical motor has…. but when it’s energized, the output shaft of the motor is rigidly connected to the cranks, requiring pretty...
