I extended the visor on my helmet and use sock-like liners. I also minimize exposure when the sun is high. When it's at 45 degrees (shadow equals height), UVB is only 10% what it is when the sun is directly overhead. At that point, I'm not concerned. Years ago I worked out the math and marked...

An Amazon customer asked, "Does it come with a visor?" Rufus answered, Yes, the Protos Integral Arborist Helmet comes with an integrated face shield that can be activated with just two fingers. The helmet includes all protective components built-in—hearing protection, face shield, and...

    New handlebar

I've always wanted to mount a 5-foot broomstick so I'll have room for lots of handlebar accessories! Maybe I'll start with a toilet-plunger handle.

Confusing nomenclature. When a bike helmet is described as having a visor, I assume they mean a bill. The root word of "visor" means "look." The face shields on knights' helmets weren't called visors until the 14th Century, when they could be flipped for the knight to look around. Probably, a...

    tire pressure

Schwalbe used to publish pressure recommendations for each model and size tire according to gross weight. 45 psi looked right for me. When I hauled a heavy load, the steering was dangerous. I should have increased the pressure to 60. Eventually, I found that 50 worked better than 45. After I...

    New handlebar

I checked availability. Amazon can't get shims to me until April 25, 2026. I needed them September 5, 2022. Was I supposed to ride no-hands for 1328 days like @PCeBiker ?

    New handlebar

The handlebar clamp blocked me from sliding the riser onto the stem from the top, so I released the height-adjustment lever, lifted the top section of the stem out, and slid the riser on from the bottom. I hope spreading the riser clamp didn't weaken it. The bars on my Radrunner put my hands at...

Wire Organizing- What Do You Use?

You must be thinking of Thomas B. Doolittle: 1839 to 1921. Telephone wire used to be iron. Copper had 90% less resistance, but each step of drawing it into wire made it harder. That increased tensile strength but also made it increasingly brittle. By the time they had the gauge they wanted, it...

Wire Organizing- What Do You Use?

@PedalUma : "When I was about nine, my dad told me to never rely on a soldered joint for mechanical strength." A soldered joint can be reliable. My house was wired in 1926. The Western Union splices are still fine. The electrician was killed shortly afterward, wiring lights at a ball park. I...

Wire Organizing- What Do You Use?

The test splices never failed at the splice (instead breaking outside of the splice area), leaving NASA to conclude that "the solder connection at the splice was as strong or stronger than the un-spliced wires". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Union_splice

Horn, Bell or Voice, how to warn others of your presence and intentions

I use my red brrring bell (top right) to be pleasant. My clarinet horn (top left) is a little more insistent. The red boat horn (bottom) is to honk needlessly at the scrap metal truck that honks needlessly at me every morning. It tickles him that by pressing a plunger, I can honk louder than he...

    Easy way to clean rotors.

There was a period when extended foggy humidity softened the resin pads on two bikes. They would contaminate rotors. Washing rotors with detergent in a bathroom sink cleaned them. Then I'd have to rebed. I discovered that washing with plain water would clean the rotors. Those deposits must have...

    Easy way to clean rotors.

18 percent sounds intimidating. How do you ascend? A 450 pound bike would need 368 newtons, or 243 newton meters on a 26" wheel. On my Radmission, my gross weight was over 300 pounds. The mechanical front brake would consistently stop me from 20 mph in 20 feet. That's 15mph per second. The...

    New handlebar

Risers like mine are commonly made in 90, 110, and 145mm sizes. Mine is 110. The adjustment point, with white degree marks, is 40mm in front of the center of the stem. If the arm were out horizontally, it would give me another 70mm, for a total of 110. Mine goes up at 60 degrees, so the whole...

    Easy way to clean rotors.

I wouldn't hold a brake for 10 seconds. Instead, I'll brake sharply, maybe 2 seconds at a time, or I'll alternate between front and back. Come to think of it, that's how I braked on hills with rim brakes in the 1960s. I see the Bike Gremlin agrees, whether it's rim brakes or disk brakes...

    New handlebar

I have the same stem! It works fine. The sides of the stem are round, and when I tighten the riser clamp, it presses against the sides. I removed the handlebars and raised the adjustable part of the stem out so that I could slide the riser on from the bottom. The original handlebar clamp on...

    Easy way to clean rotors.

The last time I bought brake pads, I had to choose resin, semi-metallic, copper, multi-metallic, or sintered. If heating results in squeaking, maybe another pad material would prevent it.
