1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Been a lot of years since I've fallen off a bike. I'm thinking a 3/8 cage of steel bars would offer as much protection in that scenario as an aluminum or plastic box? Jets of flame does sound contraindicated... Didn't see a battery in those dimensions at UPP. The Luna pack uses Samsung 30q...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

That looks solid, but I'm resisting the whole fish-battery-on-the-downtube solution with all my might. There has to be a better way, but will I be the one to find it?

So I have a terrible idea. How about I pick up this 52v, 12ah pack (or something similar) https://lunacycle.com/52v-samsung-30q-12ah-high-power/ which measures 11.5"x3.5"x3.5" and built it a cage that would mount on the seat tube brazeons inside the frame? I'm thinking of using bent steel rod...

Actually, with 52 V on hand I can think of another highly effective deterrent...

Maybe I'll just get my bike a vicious dog...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

I'm frankly a little obsessed with mounting my battery on the seat tube. There's a 52v15ah triangle arrangement that I think will do the trick if I can work out a way to mount it. Dreams of metal frames and fiberglass and locking mechanisms and hinges... Another thought occurred to me...

Your IGH costs more than my entire build. Someday, after I've sold off my human bride and her spawn...

Glad to hear it, and in no way here to bash Bafang! Bringing reliable, affordable, effective ebike kits to the market is driving a revolution, if YouTube is any guide, and I'm really looking forward to spending all my money. But you know how it is when you're thinking of a build; every little...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

I've heard good things about the Kool Stop pads, but I am fresh off the boat here. In other news, the first bike arrived yesterday, and it looks like a good, sturdy bit of gear. The "Super Stealth Dark" is a decent looking metallic gray. The 17.5" frame seems to fit correctly, if slightly...

I just vaguely recall reading somewhere that center locks were less desirable in some way. Maybe less compatible? The Betamax of discs? If they're fine, I'm fine. Thanks!

I know nothing I didn't read on the Internet, but a quick google of 'BBSHD peanut butter' turns up a lot of results.

Truly appreciate the benefit of your wisdom and experience, Thomas. I did see a video last night on building a fiberglass battery holder that was inspiring, but uncertain how many new trucks this old dog can learn at one time. Since a functional, turnkey solution exists I'll likely resign...

Their 52v Super Shark looks nice and compact. Sadly, I have no Android device. Do I still not need a controller? Is the Eggrider display the one used on the Super 73 bikes? Love the idea of programming presets that I can change on the fly! Is there a way to secure a triangle battery such...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Don't get me started on batteries. Like, really don't. Honestly that's the part of this whole build I'm most dreading. Why are they all so... visible? Clunky? Insecure and subject to theft/vandalism? Eager to explode if insulted or abused? Why can't I just stuff the entire frame with...

Hmmm... the plot thickens! A new contender! Is 5th gear direct? To the Interwebs! ETA: was hoping to avoid a centerlock disc. Should I not?

Oh, and Ive already started dreaming of a future build mating a LightningBolt or Cyclone and an old Nuvinci N171 CVT!

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Thanks Thomas, Yeah. Getting the gearing right would be critical for a single-speed. But why spend extra for a mid-drive and not take advantage of the possibility of a low and high gear option, amirite? I think a 42-44T up front and an 18 out back should make for a nice all-around...

Very kind, oh air-cooled one! The Gravity bikes do seem solidly built, and you can't argue with the price. I actually ordered two, as I wanted the 27.5x2.8 wheelset but waited too long. They only had the 19" frame left, so I ordered the 29er for the 17.5" frame. The fact that the 'Matte...

As Gord is my witness, I typed 'internal geared hubs'.

Well... it's just a plan. I hear you can dump a 3k watt mid drive on a single speed and just go! ; ) Since I'm all in on internal geared hubs for ebikes I was drawn to the nice horizontal dropouts at the back. Won't need a chain tensioner!
