1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

I was just browsing around universalcycles.com looking for a heavy duty, single speed ebike chain when I stumbled across their custom wheelbuilding service, which looks to have extensive hub/rim/spoke options and is, IMVHO, quite affordable. I'd considered rebuilding my existing bikesdirect.com...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

So now I'm torn... I could motor up now and start riding, and upgrade the rear hub and brakes later, or wait for all the acoustic stuff to be finished and then add the BBSHD...

STILL TRYING TO MAKR WIRK !

I don;'t know much about hub motors, but I must say you appear to have done a great job on the paint! Is it DIY? Thinking about doing my forks in red to set off the sparkle-gray of my frame, and maybe the battery box and the rear hub if I can find a convincing way to tint aluminium.

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Yeah. Close packing the cells in a honeycomb, while it allows for a smaller pack, is a trade-off for thermal efficiency. I think spacers like these are a good compromise: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32951013779.html Isolates the cells and provides for a little airflow while maintaining...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

My thought is that I'll hang the box from the top and seat tubes with some U bolts (with one leg cut off to account for the hinge and dipped in flex-seal) mounted to brackets inside the box at the top and rear. This would make the nuts inaccessible while the box is locked. I'll run the Bafang...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Actually found the medium size for $20. Going to run over to Makersmith this week with a buddy and see if we can cut off one corner while maintaining the hinge and lock. Going to mount it under the juncture of the top tube and seat tube. Should look pretty trick if we can get it to to work...

1st e-bike conversion, talk me up, or talk me down!

Busy weekend. The DeadEye 27.5 with the 19" frame and 27.5x2.8 wheelset arrived, and I built both bikes and transferred the wheels and the cool chain tensioners for the dropouts to the 29. Took a $10 hit reselling the 27.5 on Craigslist, as the guy wanted it for his son, and I'm a softy who...

    Battery Pack Dimensions

Does that first pack seem okay? It's correctly sized for my application, and takes the Panasonic NCR18650PF 2900 mAh, 3.7v 3C cell. Another option is very close in size, but uses Samsung cells at 2600 mAh. Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely trying to use a triangle battery pack that's...

DIY Electric Bike With Bafang Mid Drive

We're in the same boat, as I'm at the beginning of the beginning of a bikesdirect.com / BBSHD build. I went aluminium for the stiffness and to keep my first build cost-effective.

    Battery Pack Dimensions

I found the answer to part of my question: 70 cells in the smaller pack vs 98 in the larger one. Still groping about in the darkness, though. How are they the same amp hours? Or are they?

Adding ebike lights & a drum brake for an all weather commuter

I'm a DC native, but currently living in the untamed wilderness of Reston. Before moving out here we were at the River House across from Pentagon Row. Nice to "meet" you!

Adding ebike lights & a drum brake for an all weather commuter

What the Deuce? Are bike drum brakes significantly different from car drum brakes? The Enlightened Master has this to say: https://boards.straightdope.com/t/wet-brakes-question/168913/3 Back in the days of drum brakes, driving through a puddle would cause the brakes drums to fill with water...

    Battery Pack Dimensions

So I'm looking at a handful of (to me, anyway) very exciting and creative ideas for mounting batteries to an ebike, and one of the first things that strikes me is the weird variance in the dimensions of some 18650 cell lithium battery packs. For example, (using DHGate not because I'd ever buy...
