Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Thanks! I sent them a message asking where I can get them. I will also begin searching on my own...any tips?

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Interesting. This is what the Schwalbe NA site (where one can order tires) shows. Guess I will have to contact them:

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

I wish they made SS+ in 700 x 47. We ride a number of trails that have a stone dust surface and there are often soft spots. We’ll see how the 700 x 40’s work out. Might choose to go the other direction if they would fit...more research 😉

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

So I mounted the SmartSam Plus tires today. They are clearly more sturdy (thicker material) than standard SmartSams and consequently significantly more difficult to mount. I could mount the standard tire without levers...the “plus” version required lots of levering. Test ride is day after...

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Well, I take back what I said about BikeSomeWhere. Tires were received today. Looks like the issue was USPS not scanning the package on intake. I did get notification that the package was delivered so apparently it was scanned on my end 🤷‍♂️. Not real helpful.

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

This looks like BikeSomeWhere gaming the Amazon process...creating a shipping label so that they can bill your account and you can’t easily cancel the order. There’s a pretty clear pattern in the negative reviews online. They could be playing a cash flow game. I’m tempted to order 2 more...

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Well my SmartSam Plus saga has taken a frustrating turn. I ordered a pair of 700 x 40c tires on Amazon. Third-party vendor is BikeSomeWhere.com. Big mistake! Even though the item was listed as “in stock” with delivery 10 days out from order, they still have not shipped, according USPS. The...

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Well I’m glad my Smart Sam Plus tires are on the way. In the category of, “it’s always something,” 13 miles into a 15 mile trail ride, my newly booted tire with a new tube went flat 🤦‍♂️. My wife found the culprit, a tiny, sharp bit of quartzite embedded in one of the tire nubs had penetrated...

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

You clean the spot on the inside of the tire, peel off the backing and stick this over the puncture.

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Picked up some Park Tool boots today! Thanks for the tip! My folks live west of Schenectady, I’m looking for some good trails to ride in that area for when we are up that way next summer, Covid willing.

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

So I can get the 700x40 from a few sources in North America, including direct from Schwalbe NA. Problem is that the delivery is 10 days to 2 weeks out. The sidewall puncture is not a major hole...more of an abrasion with a small cut (less than 2 mm) and the hole in the tube was a pinhole. I...

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

Thanks. I think I can get the 700 x 40 from US suppliers. More research ahead 😉.

Schwalbe Smart Sam: Tyres That Are Silent On-Road And Quite Aggressive Off-Road

My Giant Explore e+3 came with 47-622 Smart Sams. I really like them but I had a sidewall puncture today and I feel better replacing the tire as opposed to just the tube. I’m having trouble finding them. Schwalbe NA is out of stock. Bike Inns has them but they call them “Smart Samoa.”...

    Crank arm length

Update: FSA support guy responded to a phone call and he’s been really helpful. He explained that what is available as replacement parts is largely dictated by what the OEMs order for production. He did find me a pair of 155mm crank arms to try (at no cost). In theory, FSA makes compatible...

    Crank arm length

Update....after a 12 mi ride with no issues, the right side pedal (with LH thread) decided to unscrew itself 3 miles into the next ride, destroying the threads in the crank arm. I put the 170mm crank arms back on, kept riding and pondered my next move. Since one crank arm was stripped out...

    Crank arm length

Update: Well the exercise bike parts didn’t work out. The online description was overall length, not hole-to-hole so they were too short. My knee Doc confirmed the range of motion on my right knee is 10 degrees less than my left. My dealer got me a pair of 165mm left side crank arms and...

    Crank arm length

Update: I found some 6.25 inch (158.75 mm) crank arms (left & right). The trick is that they are parts for an exercise bike. They were not too expensive and appear to have bicycle standard interfaces for the pedals and crank shaft. We’ll see. I’ll also be careful to ensure they are robust...

    Crank arm length

Thanks Harry. I can easily find 165mm left sides and I can find 160mm crank sets but, unfortunately, I would have to buy 2 to get 2 left arms. Attached picture shows that the right side crank arm on my bike is the same as a left side and the spider is completely independent. I will be working...

    Crank arm length

Thanks for the input. I have the saddle about as high as I can go without having my knee completely straight on the downstroke. I’ve found several pages on this subject and shorter crank arms are pretty much the standard recommendation. I have found some methods for calculating optimum crank...
