Giant Explore e+3 Chainring Spider Seems Loose. Time for Motor Overhaul?

While doing routine maintenance on my 2018 Giant Explore e+3, I noticed that the “spider” that connects the chainring to the shaft appears to be loose on the shaft. At first, I suspected motor bearing wear but after looking more closely, I see that there is an inner shaft, connected to the crank...

Spoke Tension — Giant eX-2 Wheels

I am looking for the spoke tension specs on Giant eX-2 wheels as used on the 2018 Giant Explore e+3. Google says 110-130 kgf but I recently broke a spoke on my rear wheel and discovered that front and rear spokes are different. I took the rear wheel to my LBS to have the spoke replaced and to...

    Erratic Odometer

I have 2 Giant 2018 Explore e+3 bikes. Both seem to record miles erratically. The Trip Distance seems to work fine but total miles odometer seems to “forget” a ride as often as not. I’ve started keeping a log of miles ridden based on my fitness band records. One bike has missed 87 of the last...

Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

I regularly re-torque these bolts, so much so that I’m worried about stripping out the heads. Does anyone know whether these are grade 8 bolts or could I replace them with stainless steel? TIA.

Known Issues & Problems with Giant Products + Help, Solutions & Fixes

If the tick is still an issue, check your pedal bearings. My pedals wore out on my Explore e3. Also, I have found that the motor mounting bolts loosen over time. You might have your dealer check those.

    Noisy Giant / Yamaha SynchDrive

Final Update. I got about 1/8 turn out of each of the 3 mounting bolts to get to 30 N-m torque. Problem solved. Something to check periodically going forward. I found a service manual for the 2020 versions of Giant / Yamaha SynchDrives here...

    Noisy Giant / Yamaha SynchDrive

UPDATE…i was getting a persistent creaking noise while pedaling today. It was present only while pedaling and whether the motor was on or completely switched off. I got the bike up to a descent clip and then downshifted while maintaining the same speed. The frequency of the creaking (not pitch...

    Hollywood Destination e

I have been using a Hollywood Destination e rack for about a year now. I am very happy with it with one exception. The knobs on the frame grabbers can work themselves loose and fall off when the rack is mounted but not in use. To be fair, there is a cartoon in the manual showing that the knobs...

    Noisy Giant / Yamaha SynchDrive

The dealer couldn’t find a problem but I kept poking at it. It turned out to be bad pedals 😂. I did find some places that rebuild drives for about $400. The dealer said the Giant repair process is slow. My drive is still working fine. What I was feeling was worn out bearings on the pedal shafts...

I am putting it up for the winter. Do I keep the battery (about 60% charged now) inside for the winter? Anything else?

No USB. I just bundled up and went for a ride. 😉 Wasn’t too cold today.

I am putting it up for the winter. Do I keep the battery (about 60% charged now) inside for the winter? Anything else?

My Giant manual recommends storing the battery at 60% charge. All the generic Li-ion tech stuff I have read agrees that storing a fully charged battery is detrimental to the battery. Does anyone know whether there is a safe way to discharge a battery (other than riding) from fully charged to...

    Noisy Giant / Yamaha SynchDrive

I have a 2018 Giant Explore e+3 with about 6K miles on it. It has a Yamaha SynchDrive. Today, the drive started making noises that sound like a bearing is failing. Full symptoms: - Noise is like 3 or 4 BBs rattling in a water bottle with occasional louder pops - Volume of noise is proportional...

So 2021 products are now available on the Schwalbe NA online store. Ordered my 47-622 Smart Sam Plus tires today and they should ship tomorrow. These will go on my wife’s bike. 700-40c SS+ tires are working fine on my bike. The only difference I have noticed is that 47-622 tires were a bit...

Rode 23 miles on the 700x40 SS+ tires today. All pavement so not much of a test. They are certainly quiet.
