2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Water temp was 68°F yesterday. Typically peaks in the low 70's in September, but you can comfortably wade barefoot year round. Our weather's different from LA's. They get hotter and stronger Santa Ana winds in fall and winter and many fewer marine layer days in the spring and summer. Air temps...

Turbo Vado SL 4.0 Tick-Tock Noise

Very good to hear that! I plan to ride my SL a long, long time.

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Some photos from today's Coast Highway ride south to Del Mar. First objective: Hot dogs at Moonlight Beach. The cute 70-something couple we met there has taken this aluminum-framed tandem on major rail trails all over the country — including some famous ones back east that @6zfshdb and...

Turbo Vado SL 4.0 Tick-Tock Noise

Sorry, just edited my reply to change references to "motor" when I really meant "drive unit". The drive unit still functions as your bottom bracket, even when the motor's off.

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

La Fleche Wallone tomorrow. Just watched the 2025 NBC highlights. Never guess who just rode away at the bottom of the final climb with ~1 km to go. Roll and VV were apoplectic at his gravity-defying seated speeds up the double-digit gradients, which in places were over 20%.

Turbo Vado SL 4.0 Tick-Tock Noise

Wow, how frustrating! Lots of diagnostic work here, but you haven't really addressed the drive unit or cranks yet. The fact that your tick-tock syncs with pedal rotation makes me wonder about both. After all, the drive unit still functions as your bottom bracket, even when the motor's off. This...

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

Stumbled across YouTube "final kms" highlights of the 2026 Tour of the Alps, Stage 1. Not on the streaming guide posted by @stompandgo . Unfortunately, streaming only on FloBikes in the US. Heard some big name riders mentioned but never heard of this race. Is it an important one? Would like to...

CREO SL clicking/snapping noise while pedaling

Sorry, beyond my pay grade. If there's a Park Tool video on the subject on YouTube, just do what they say. Also search the forum. I know this has come up before.

    Signs of Spring

Last of the baby duck photos, I promise. The parents stayed close by this evening — maybe because it was getting close to dusk, when the coyotes tend to come out.

    Signs of Spring

One of the small lakes in our greenbelt gets baby ducks every mid-spring. And every year, the whole neighborhood goes absolutely nuts over them. The cuteness these little ones pump out borders on lethal. Don't get the wrong idea. After the 1st week or so, the parents aren't all that...

To put this year's race in context, Amstel Gold 2025: We see so many stunning finishes in this sport. This is the kind where the one stunned most is the winner.

California Assembly member proposes driver's license for e-bikes

So let's hear your solution. Assuming you'd like to keep the ebike access you so clearly enjoy.

Used Windy to see the maps with the wind, rain, fronts, and pressure centers headed your way. It just shook its head in grim silence.

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

Horrific crash at 41 km, with Vauquelin sliding out in a turn and taking Jorgenson down hard with him. The latter looked badly injured and left the race. The energy left in his somersaulting bike after he hit the deck showed the true violence of the impact. I was pulling for Skjelmose to repeat...

Someone Left the Bike Out In the Rain

Fresh water is poorly conductive. Salty water is vastly more conductive and corrosive. Add electricity to the mix, and that becomes a very important distinction.

California Assembly member proposes driver's license for e-bikes

Strongly disagree. Ebikes enable weak, untrained riders (like kids who'd never leave their screens for bicycles otherwise) to reach and maintain speeds otherwise well out of their reach on flats and hills. The lower-end RadRunner-type ebikes typically ridden by kids here in coastal SoCal are...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Now that I've priced carbon wheels and read the post-upgrade performance reports from @Twowheelxtc and @BioWheel , I'm rapidly losing enthusiasm for carbon wheels on my SL. Was mainly hoping to improve responsiveness, but given the very high cost, the cost/benefit sounds pretty hard to justify...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Thanks! Official specs below if that helps. Running 38 mm tubeless Spec Pathfinder Pros now — said to be the largest tires possible given my fenders. No problem — too old for gnarly. But I'd have to rob a bank for those wheels. Perfect. Not a serious project right now but affordable...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Thanks — all valuable info! Even more reasons to start a lightening project at the wheels. Don't feel a great need for a more comfortable ride right now but wouldn't turn it down. Have no way to quantify the aero watts saved with deeper-section wheels. But with only 320 Wh of battery, the...
