CA state senator to hold ebike safety webinar

CA state senator Blakespear just announced this upcoming ebike safety webinar. I plan to attend. She's all about protecting legal ebiking and public safety at the same time. I fully support her proposed bill SB1167, which goes after deceptive manufacturers and dealers who sell e-motos and...

    Just for fun...

Gas pumps should be seen and not heard Our first fill-up after leaving coastal San Diego County came in the Sierra foothills between Fresno and Yosemite. And with it came an unexpected treat — a gas pump with no ads blaring at me while I'm stuck there filling up. Every single pump back home...

Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon NP route suggestions? NOW MOOT

Final follow-up Glad I left the bike at home. Most of the main and secondary roads we've seen so far look like this... Gorgeous cycling weather and scenery here on the west slope of the Sierra, but riding with that kind of highway-speed traffic exposure's not for me.

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

There's something very satisfying about riding fast on dirt. Hard to describe, but this video gives a hint of the feeling. Good to see Wout enjoying himself before the TdF.

What's on Tuesday? We're on a car trip now without HBO Max access. Looking forward to a break from Giro-seeking behavior on tomorrow's rest day.

    Garage Bike Floor Stand

I have 9.3 — as I understand it, same stand without the tool tray. Like it a lot. I wouldn't say heavy, though. Easy to lift with one hand. Easy to deploy and stow.

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I've had a couple of close calls with my kickstand. Couldn't get along without it now, but there IS a learning curve if you're used to riding without. My learning curve with spiked MTB pedals was much longer and bloodier.

Thinking through how I'd pace myself in a 26 mi TT. Can't be an easy thing to figure out. You have to plan to finish in the red and fly as close to the red as you dare every mile before that. Must take a lot of training to know your body and the demands of that particular distance well enough...

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Ah, memories! When we lived in Orinda, the goats would come every year in huge numbers to clear brush (aka fuel) from the many open spaces. Had several interesting conversations with the herders. Their way of life couldn't have been farther from mine, but they loved what they do. Often...

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

Interesting that the US, the UK, and AUS all have this problem of lawless young males running amok on public infrastructure on illegal e-motos. Q. Is it also happening in the EU? Anywhere else? Asia? I suspect 2 factors at play here: (1) YouTube speads the Surron/rideout/outlaw teen...

Update: Bike's staying home now — many thanks for the replies! Can't find promising places to ride near where we're staying, and knee's getting better for walking. So leaving the bike home now and back to Plan A.

GC after Stage 7, Gall had quite a ride today, leaving him only 17 sec behind Jonas. Tomorrow should be interesting.

Sill waiting to see the final GC standings after S7 as I leave for an appointment. How much longer is Eulalio likely to hold onto the pink jersey given today's result? I think Jonas took about 2 minutes out of him today.

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

I fear that by the time the general media learns the distinction between legal ebikes and e-motos — and why it's important — the PR damage to legal ebikes will be massive and irreversible. Meanwhile, the misperception will continue to drive both the public calls for action and the regulatory...

Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon NP route suggestions? NOW MOOT

Thanks, very helpful. May be facing a similar situation in Wawona. Just scouted the roads there using Google Maps in satellite view. The main roads are twisty and narrow with no bike lanes, and often no rideable shoulders. All the non-MTB RideWithGPS routes in the area use roads like this. A...

Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon NP route suggestions? NOW MOOT

Thanks! Been to all of these spectacular parks several times and once cruised parts of Yosemite Valley on a crummy rental. Otherwise, no cycling experience in any of them. Plenty of hills at home that get my heart pumping, but I think the hills I'm about to face will at minimum be much longer.

Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon NP route suggestions? NOW MOOT

Update: Bike's staying home now — thanks for the replies! And now for something totally different from my usual coastal riding: Leaving soon for 12 days in Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks — all in the Sierra Nevada. Taking the Vado SL 1. All 3 parks allow legal ebikes...

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

Agree with you guys and Milan: The organizers put the riders and their efforts to get into position at unnecessary risk. Disappointingly, while somewhat sympathetic, the TNT commentators back in the studio — especially Orla, and even Matt — thought in the end that that's the price of cycling...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

I'd like to see the data behind that statement. If you plot empirical mechanical motor power Pm vs. rider power Pr on a Specialized Vado SL 2 mid-drive, you get a ramp and flat geometry with a ramp of constant slope. You see this consistently in the excellent field work by @mcdenny in...
