Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

Heh, I'm wrong, it's in Australia. Australia leading the way on helmet safety again, go ozzies. http://bike-sharing.blogspot.com/2010/10/melbourne-gets-on-top-of-its-slow.html Although, apparently, there are Schwalbe tube-vending machines in Germany...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@MechaNut yeah, I see too many riders here with no helmet on - usually either yahoos on BMX bikes, or people on ride-share e-bikes. I think the ride-share bikes are great, definitely better than Uber or Lyft which add to traffic congestion, but I can't understand why none of these riders will...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@Toomanycats btw, I looked up your Raleigh Lore and I think I have a possible explanation as to why my R&M Homage is more stable at high speeds. I see three major differences: First, unlike the Lore, and also many R&M models, the Homage's rack is an integral part of the frame rather than...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

So I pulled the trigger on a helmet. I splurged a bit, although it was research-based splurging. It originally came down to the 100% Status, Fox Proframe and Bell Full-9. After looking into the Status more, I discovered that while conforming to most standards, it isn't MIPS, so that was a...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

Weird there are a lot of similar threads in other forums online about the notion that too big a rotor can break the fork, but little actual data and few anecdotes of it actually happening, mostly physical theory. I can find no information on Fox's site about disc rotor limitations for the Fox...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@steve mercier you need to get adapters of course; I'm not entirely sure about fork clearance, I'd have to take a look, that's a good point.

Causes/prevention of Go SwissDrive torque sensor failure?

Unfortunately, it had to be shipped back as part of the warranty replacement. I think they will probably diagnose it, refurbish it, and re-sell it to one of their many corporate clients in Europe that maintain fleets of e-bikes with Go SwissDrive units. Although they are dead officially as of...

@indianajo ouch. Thanks for the painful anecdotes, convinces me even more.

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@steve mercier I've been thinking of increasing the 180's on the R&M - Trickstuff actually makes a 223! I'm going to upgrade to hydros on the trike, on which, unfortunately, I can only go up to 180 owing to limitations of the geometry of a bracket that connects the steering to the king post for...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@Toomanycats no, not appreciably as far as I recall. Handling is still very smooth and it corners great - the R&M that is. If anything, it gets a little harder to steer. The same is true on the trike, although on that we have Marathon GT 365's, which are very grippy, and of course it's a trike...

And here are a few more cropped screenshots from Maps of Portola, Clipper and examples of trails in Mt. Diablo and Marin Headlands (neither of which are as gnarly as it can get), in that order.

By the way, here's an example of a street I descend quite often on my way to the UPS store.

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@steve mercier I was thinking after my spill how much worse it could have been. I smacked my head on the concrete 'apron' or ramp from a road onto a dirt trail - if my mouth had been open, the angle a little different and the spill a foot further back, I could have curbed my teeth on the edge...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

@PDoz thanks for the feedback, saw your input on an earlier post about helmets. I didn't see any posts directly asking this question, so I went ahead and started a new thread. Yeah, there's a side street off Portola called Corbett that is much tamer and a bike route, so I take that whenever I...

Is a full-face DH helmet for certain e-bike riding activities overkill or a good idea?

I recently had a small spill on a slippery dirt trail in a park here in San Francisco - bike went sideways, I smacked my head on some concrete at the entrance to the trail where it interfaces with the street off the curb. It's a Casco Roadster, a decent European helmet that meets EN-1078...

Causes/prevention of Go SwissDrive torque sensor failure?

@JRA thanks, I've got a bit of an update about this that I posted on the general "GSD is gone" thread.

    Go SwissDrive is gone

@JRA yeah, I went down to the garage to take a look and unlike some DIY kits, the spoke tabs and the screws are all part of one piece on the housing, so you'd have to unlace the whole wheel. On the plus side regarding my motor failing, HPV honored the warranty and is sending out a new hub motor...

Causes/prevention of Go SwissDrive torque sensor failure?

If anyone has any engineering insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated. I recently had the torque sensor fail on my GSD motor. Since GSD is out of business and my warranty runs out in a month, if it happens again I'll be on the hook for $1,400 for a replacement from HP Velotechnik, as...

    Go SwissDrive is gone

If it helps anyone else with a GSD system, I ran the calibration routine via the service tool and it failed with an error M84, indicating torque sensor failure. I'm still under warranty for a month, so I hope to get it replaced by HPV under warranty. I found out from the very helpful folks at...

Known Issues & Problems with Riese & Müller Products + Help, Solutions & Fixes

Interesting, that looks like a bad weld. It looks like the frame and rear swing arm are warrantied for 5 years, and the battery for 2 years. But it looks like you need to have registered within 4 weeks of purchasing the bike. I don't recall if I did that myself.
