    Class 3 restrictions - California

I have ridden my Class 3 Yuba Spicy Curry AT cargo ebike on coastal trails, city streets, Pacific Coast Highway, UCSD campus, etc., between Solana Beach and the Mexican border many times. I have passed police, park rangers, and border patrols. None have stopped me.

Tern GSD/HSD: Do you load it into your car? How does it fit?

I will be interested to see if you find the motor strong enough for climbing hills with a passenger or a heavy load. Bosch makes no less than six variations of their Performance Line, some capable of 65Nm and some of 85Nm of torque. My girlfriend's HSD S+ has a Bosch Performance Line motor that...

So excited to get your car-replacement advice!

I would love to have a Jones Titanium Plus LWB Spaceframe with Titanium Truss fork converted to a mid-drive ebike! But frame alone is $4550, so the conversion would probably result in an ebike costing over $10,000!

Jones H Bar on Turbo Vado: Relocating the Headlight

Something like this might work. It comes with different-size adapters to fit different diameters.

New to EBR, 2 thumbs up for Sena R2 Helmets

My girlfriend and I have been using the older R1's (non-mesh) for nearly two years. We love them. We only use them to talk to each other. No phone, no music, nothing else. I agree that they make the ride more social, you don't have to ride abreast, and you can warn each other of hazards.

So excited to get your car-replacement advice!

I have experience with a few cargo ebikes: a Tern HSD, a Yuba Spicy Curry AT (all terrain), and a Radwagon. I also own a Haibike full suspension e-mountain bike outffited with a rear rack and panniers which could be a car replacement if you don't carry a lot of stuff. I bought the Tern HSD for...

Given the difficulties finding spare parts, why would a US buyer buy anything other than Bosch?

Personally, I've had a very good experience with the Yamaha motor in my Haibike. It ran 15,000 miles without issues. Recently, I had it overhauled, not because there was anything wrong, but because I like to do preventive maintenance. All gears and bearings were still good and they were all...

Tern GSD/HSD: Do you load it into your car? How does it fit?

In mid-2020 I bought my girlfriend a Tern HSD. The first few months of ownership she would fold the handlebars and load it into her Mercedes 4-door sedan, folding the rear seats. We got a set of removable pedals so that sliding the bike into the trunk would not mar the car's interior. After...

Jones H Bar on Turbo Vado: Relocating the Headlight

I'm a big fan of Jones H-Bars. I have one on my Haibike and another on my Yuba Spicy Curry AT. The headlight of my Spicy Curry was located on top of the stem, like yours, and I relocated it to the front of the breadbasket where Yuba had conveniently drilled a hole for that purpose, so it's...

    Class 3 commuters

Perhaps the least expensive option would be to "tune" your bike with a speed derestrictor such as the bikespeed. I did that with my Yamaha-powered Haibike mountain bike and have enjoyed it for 15,000 trouble-free miles. I also added a rack and panniers. If you did that, your Yamaha Cross Core...

What are my options for a class 3 cargo bike?

I recently bought a Yuba Spicy Curry AT (all-terrain). Unlike the regular Spicy Curry, the AT model supports speeds up to 28 mph with its Bosch Cargo Line motor. It's a strong, hill-climbing motor, unlike other wimpy Bosch motors I've tried in the past. The AT model also has front suspension, a...

    Coffee Technology on The Tour

There is something to be said about slowing down and doing things properly with the right tool. Of all the brewing methods I have at my disposal—filter, French press, AeroPress, Turkish cezve—the Moka pot remains my favorite. I have to dig out the information on a cold brew method popular in my...

Radwagon 4 best value bike for short distance + hills with kids?

@overloading, my daughter has a Radwagon 4 and she likes it a lot. She uses it every day to take my granddaughter, 2 years old, to daycare. Like you, she lives in Seattle and she chose the Radwagon because the company is based in Seattle. That said, she still had to wait a few days when she...

    Helmet Recommendation

Our Sena's R1's have a clear-line-of-sight range of a few hundred yards. If a building or a hill gets in the way we may lose communication. They are really not for long-distance communication. Friends of ours, avid non-electric cyclists, have the Sena add-ons. Their complaint is that the...

Jones H bar - Flat vs Riser

I have been using a 710mm Jones H-Bar with 2.5-inch rise plus a stem riser for several years on my 2016 Haibike AllMtn ebike. If anything, I found the Jones H-Bar provides more control, not less. I also like the extra real estate for cockpit gadgets. Just like @m@Robertson, I put a lot of stuff...

    Ebikes "at work"

I pre-ordered a Yuba Spicy Curry AT all-terrain cargo ebike yesterday. It differs from the regular Spicy Curry by having a front fork suspension, seat post suspension, knobby tires, and a Bosch Cargo Line motor with support up to 28 mph (i.e. it's a Class 3 bike). I tested the Bosch Cargo Line...

    Helmet Recommendation

Being able to communicate with your fellow rider(s) is definitively a safety feature. For the past two years my girlfriend and I have been using Sena helmets when we ride together. We can talk throughout our ride, which makes the whole experience more pleasurable and sociable, and we don't have...

When is an e-bike not a bike? (article)

First of all, I don't agree that Van Moof is a super-cool company, "the Apple of bikes." For one thing, their designs are ugly, starting with the top tube. I don't get that instant desire to own one as I got, back in 1984, when the first Macintosh was announced. I am a retired architect (now a...

    Yamaha error 15

Sorry to hear about your problems with your Yamaha PW system, @Lopez. My experience has been the opposite. My Haibike's Yamaha PW system has been extremely reliable. In over 5 years and nearly 15,000 miles, nothing has gone wrong. So much so that a conventional bike shop services my bike for...
