2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

My rides since last November are best measured in small doses of Rab. Since mid May I've begun enjoying longer rides and today ventured across Rt 250, did my Turbo sprint on it, had a longer confidence building ride of 16m with no aftereffects.

Unsolicited comments about your ebike lately?

@DaveMatthews Last fall on a local country ride I noticed riders, strong, fairly young coming up on me…I didn’t make it easy for them…but youth will be served. The passing last rider (barely breathing hard) said “That looks like fun.” I responded to his back “For an old guy.” He looked back and...

Unsolicited comments about your ebike lately?

A friend made the comment to me “So how much do you have in those two ebikes? And then showed me a news article about BYD’s electric car lineup and pointed out I could be riding in an air conditioned e-car for the same price.

I looked it up several ways and couldn’t get past ‘moot point’. Hughes’ poem is full of short ’rooty’ sounds, Anglo-Saxon blunt words…nothing in the way of Romance language. The poem is a perfect description of the participants I used to see. “Watch and hide inside themselves/Absorbing the...

@Chargeride perhaps you can clarify (a bit) the. Usage and meaning of a word I ran across from Devon farmer and poet Ted Hughes. from his ‘The Formal Auctioneer’ the word “Moots” as in “A snaggle of faces/Like pulled-out and heaped up old moots.” a Washington Post article on the roads...

I wish I had a recording of the gab in the scalehouse at Orange Livestock in Virginia in the 90s when I worked there on market day. Hillbillies, rednecks, plain hill folk coming to the sale for the entertainment. Some Amish in the mix to add a bit of the old world

    Good Reads for the Season

The Third Policeman…If there are any bicycle riders reading…the great Flann O’Brien, a contemporary of Joyce, wrote a great novel with the bicycle as a central character. The book, now an acknowledged masterpiece, was unpublished in the author’s lifetime finally seeing print in the late 1960s...

Regarding those Charolais calves…I meant to imply ‘rustling’, an American custom since the 1800s. I believe some of the old boys from Orange Livestock years ago were experienced in this dark art. BTW…the fellow I have been getting my calves from the last few years actually buys from Miz Hicks…I...

Bad weather coming sent me out in the cold (30s) which is all I can stand. Ten local miles (I'm thinking of changing to KM to pad the stats), still riding with mostly one leg. I stopped at Ms. Hick's place to admire her stock. Some of those calves would look real good in my pasture...but Hicks...

Happy Holidays I am still recuperating from my leg injury in early November. I’ve been riding short distances on high(ish) power. No more pain…but paranoia that such a trivial thing (Torn abductor) could be so serious. The accompanying anemia hasn’t helped but the main problem now seems to...
