Building A New Wheel Is A Nightmare

I built several sets of wheels in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I used DT wheels, spokes, and nipples (brass only) and this was my bible. I used Phil wood hubs exclusively. One wheelset was singlespeed, one was a flip-flop fixed/free, and one was an 8 speed freewheel setup. All are still working...

Replacing a stolen e-bike! Decisions, decisions, decisions

Yep! What I discovered is that for me, a lightweight ebike (probably singlespeed) might be the perfect ticket to ride into my late 70’s…I hope! I am now fine with the idea of getting off and walking up the hills when my knees are saying “think again old man”

Replacing a stolen e-bike! Decisions, decisions, decisions

In my case, I often stop and buy my supply of fruit ( Mandarin Oranges, Pineapple, Yellow Dragon Fruit, Bananas, and Grenadillas) before I start up the grade to my apartment. That tops out at over 25% on 2 short pitches. It was relatively easy on the Turbo Vado. On a good day with no load I...

Replacing a stolen e-bike! Decisions, decisions, decisions

My 2022 Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 was stolen here in Medellin over2 months ago. It’s looking mighty unlikely it will be recovered. So I have been thinking a lot about how I used my TV, what I liked and what I disliked about it, what kind of riding I actually do, and what I would like in a new...

    Moving Away From Heavy E-Bikes

I guess for me, the pertinent point is this: i have ridden high quality road bikes (DeRosa, Cannondale, Specialized, Davidson) and high quality street motorcycles (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Triumph) for decades and I loved both. But for me as a retired mid-70’s cyclist what I enjoy is the feel of...

    Moving Away From Heavy E-Bikes

Actually Stefan, I dont think there is room for both, as some point the american lust for more speed, more power, and more range pushes the ”bike” right out of ebike, and moves it clearly into emotorcycle.

    Moving Away From Heavy E-Bikes

This thread has become very pertinent to me since the theft of my 2021 Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0. I have been thinking a lot about what I would really like in a new ebike, and some of the answers have surprised me! Am I interested in an ebike with a throttle……absolutely NOT! I found that the...

    2024 Specialized ebikes?

Police report filed! A big NO on the insurance. The police seem very optimistic that they will recover it….apparently Medellin has a rather comprehensive network of surveillance cams!

    2024 Specialized ebikes?

Just so y’all know, my lovely lil red Turbo Vado 4.0 was stolen while I was swimming at the aquatic center here in Medellin on Wednesday…the police are very optimistic and say they think there is an excellent chance it will be recovered. if not, maybe its time to get a Turbo Vado SL, but wait...

    2024 Specialized ebikes?

Does anyone know anything about when the 2024 models will be appearing, and more importantly when they will be available for purchase globally? currently both the Colombian and US Specialized website show extremely limited availability of many models, and no availability whatsoever of others. my...

Considering a Specialized, got a few questions

Y know, you can drop the lift weight of the Vado by pulling the battery off. Takes like 5 seconds and drops what maybe 3kg of weight.

Considering a Specialized, got a few questions

To the OP. I live at 5300” asl in Medellin Colombia, and I have a short, but rather challenging climb from the valley floor where Central Medellin is to my apartment on the hillside west of downtown. I purchased a Vado 4.0 about a year ago and at first I was quite bummed by how heavy it is...

New stuff on my Turbo Vado 4.0

Now that I have a couple hundred K’s on my ebike I have to say I like it much better. The handlebars are a couple inches narrower which is handy when maneuvering in traffic, they also have a nice bit of give to them for soaking up bumps. And I really like the Ritchey carbon seatpost. I just...

New stuff on my Turbo Vado 4.0

well Stefan, I love these long distance chats with you! regardless if you are correct or not now, you will certainly be correct in 3 or 4 years when I plan to replace the Turbo Vado…I will be pushing 80 by then!🤣😂🤙

New stuff on my Turbo Vado 4.0

If I replace the wheels with some 650B Roval carbon wheels and Rene Herse tires, all I will have left to complain about will be the suspension fork…I really would prefer a Carbon fork and save the 1.5-2kg of weight

New stuff on my Turbo Vado 4.0

Yes there are some damned steep streets here, above 25% grades aren’t uncommon. However, the Turbo Vado SL is almost 10 kg lighter than my Turbo Vado, and the SL has lower gears than the Turbo Vado. I can get up the grade to my apartment in Sport mode which I suspect would be comparable to the...

New stuff on my Turbo Vado 4.0

Well, awhile back I posted that I had would rather have a Turbo Vado SL. Thats still true, but the Turbo Vado SL is not available in Colombia. So I am doing my best to enjoy all the fine qualities of my Turbo Vado and change a few things around to be more to my liking. I have always ridden...

Replacing saddle and seat post on Turbo Como 4.0 IGH

I just did the reverse of what you plan on a Turbo Vado. I removed the suspension seatpost and installed a carbon seatpost and a leather saddle with titanium rails. it was a 30.9. if you are unsure, the shims are around $10.

Replacing suspension seatpost on turbo vado with non suspension seatpost

Did you get the straight or offset model? Also, what brand shim did you use or a DIY?

Replacing suspension seatpost on turbo vado with non suspension seatpost

That, in tandem with a saddle that suits my posterior better, mabye a Brooks or hopefully a Berthoud should be helpful!
