Issues with inexpensive CREE headlights on Amazon, eBay

My 8-cell 8400mAh pack that came with my 5-LED, ~4500 lumen headlight probably doesn't have a BMS on the pack, however, the charger that mine came with most certainly stops charging it once it hits ~9.5V (it's an 8.4V nominal pack), so I can charge mine overnight without any problems. My...

How struggling can it be to lift a 60lbs eBike to the 3rd floor?

I've been lugging my ~60lb ebike up and down two stories and I think it's terrible. It's do-able, but far from ideal. In contrast, whenever I carry my 28lb FS mountain bike or my ~25lb road bike up and down the stairs, it feels as light as a feather. I think the weight limit for comfortably...

No, I didn't buy one. ;-) It seems like you're against crowdfunded ebikes – that much is certain. I won't try to convince you of the benefits of crowdfunding. I mean, it's not like the auto industry has taken notice of crowdfunding or anything. Would you believe it if I told you that a car...

    My Next Build

Have you ever seen those black chain covers on fixed-gear/single-speed/IGH bikes? I've seen them on folding bikes. They use some flexible black ABS plastic to cover ~65% of the chain, leaving exposed the portion of the chain that needs to be open to the chainring and rear cog. I thin they reduce...

Carbon belts will always be continuous. There's no way to bond a severed belt (even using epoxy) that would provide the strength of the original belt. :D

    Flux Bike

There are plenty of reasons. When it's crowdfunded, there is no dealer to mark up the bike, so you can sell the bike for 30-40% less than retail. These bikes would surely be selling for $1,799 - $2,299 at a dealer, whereas on Indiegogo, they can sell them for $1,099 - $1,699. The only problem...

    Flux Bike

Bofeili motors power some Optibike models, and they've been making mid-drives since at least 2014, if not earlier, and most of their motors advertise 450W, so this motor could actually just be a 450W unit that's badged as 250W for regulatory compliance purposes (they want to sell in...

    Flux Bike

I like that they chose the SR Epixon front suspension fork for their Trail and Attack models. Same fork that Stromer chose for the ST2. Quality air fork and brakes all on a bargain-priced bike. UPDATE: Flux has since downgraded the front suspension fork on the Trail model to an SR Suntour XCR...

    Flux Bike

I rode the Trail version around SF and it's pretty peppy. It didn't feel underpowered at all. I think they're understating the motor power. It probably won't take you up to 30MPH on flat ground, but it accelerates quite quickly to 20MPH. I didn't try it up a hill but I imagine it'd climb well...

    My Next Build

Sweet build! I like the cross frames because they have disc brakes and more tire clearance if you want to run 38C tires. Do you prefer bikes with no suspension, though? Seems like it'd be a pretty rough ride above 20MPH.

Why aren't there any reviews on ZEV electric bicyles?

Most of their bikes look like imported Chinese electric scooters, not ebikes. I only see two ebikes listed, and they look like confused, haphazardly-chosen chimeras made of cheap parts. For example, the control pad looks a 1980s clock radio from the dollar store: I do like the frame that...

Anyone tried both an ST2 & A Kalkhoff S11 Integrale

The belt drive is fantastic, however, the Shimano Alfine 11 is well known for not being a very reliable IGH. It's prone to mechanical failure, and it's difficult or impossible to change gears under load (when climbing a steep hill, for instance). In most circumstances, though, the Alfine 11...

Anyone tried both an ST2 & A Kalkhoff S11 Integrale

The ST2 is much faster. If you want to cruise at 28MPH, choose the Stromer. The Kalkhoff Integrale S11 is an amazing bike, too, however, it's better for cruising in the 20-24MPH range. Also, the S11 might climb really steep hills a bit better than the ST2, however, the ST2's additional power (up...

Unique suspension wheel may be the answer for ebikes

That is insane! Looks like a technology that might actually work! The only problem with it is that it increases the weight of the wheel significantly, which may severely affect performance/acceleration. I added tire liners to my 700x47C tires to deal with all the flat tires I was getting, and...

Court, can you compare the 2015 Dash against the 2016?

I rode the 2016 at Interbike and its mid-drive motor was about as loud as a lawnmower (in comparison to the nearly silent 2015 model with a hub motor, that is). Surely there are louder mid-drives than the Currie/IZIP/TransX mid-drive, but since I ride a 2015 Dash daily, the difference was...

New more affordable electronic shifter coming

It's quite obvious: a cable under tension stretches over time and has to be readjusted or replaced every so often. Having a data cable doesn't require those adjustments. It's not clear to me why someone would prefer the solution that requires more maintenance vs. one without it.
