2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Yamaha. I think only some of the Canada spec Revolts were Shimano. Mine is a 2020 US market Revolt E+ Pro.

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Spent a long weekend on Marylands Eastern Shore with the family. I setup the Revolt with road tires and played roadie while I was there. Got to tour the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge (which I've previously kayaked) as well as ride as far down Hoopers Island as the road went. Backroad through a...

Getting my first road ebike - Specialized vs Canyon

There is definitely gravel in England proper. Gravelmap shows ~500 gravel segments just within the greater London area. Is this some "if my ultramarathon friend wouldn't travel to ride the gravel it doesn't count" thing?

Getting my first road ebike - Specialized vs Canyon

Well, sure. I've never been to the UK and am an American. But having followed gravel for a long time I'm used to seeing lots of UK gravel content and UK riders. Its definitely a place with a significant gravel scene! Even a brief perusal at gravelmap shows tons of unpaved segments across the UK.

Getting my first road ebike - Specialized vs Canyon

Also, not sure where Stef gets the idea that there isn't much gravel in England. Its, like, kinda famous for it!

Getting my first road ebike - Specialized vs Canyon

I commuted daily on my 15lb carbon road bike with 23mm road tires for several years. Not pure racing geometry but it was pretty horizontal (Ibis Silk Sl with 2010 era sram red 10 spd). Carried my stuff in a messenger bag. Worked great. Loved that bike. Preferred commuting on it to the...

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Family vacation up in central PA last weekend, I managed to sneak away one morning to visit Raystown for an early morning solo MTB ride in sauna conditions. Banged out 20 miles in about 2 hours, saw only 3 riders, abandoned my sunglasses about 2 minutes in, went off the trail due to...

    Ebiking with assist

I think theres just a fundamental issue of them not actually working very well. Bikes aren't super stable vehicles. They are designed to lean, and pretty much require a rider with a certain amount of balance. Training wheels for kids don't even work that great, they are almost always ridden...

    Ebiking with assist

Really, if you're concerned about crashing/tipping over to the point that you want stabilizing/training wheels, some sort of recumbent trike is the answer. Super stable, you're low to the ground (depending on the model you're very low to the ground), tadpoles are very difficult to tip unless...

    DJI motors and ebikes

Of course it took Ray to actually provide useful info beyond "it has lots of power and is totes sick man!". Screen is cool. I'd like to know if it outputs ant+ info for recording on a conventional cycling computer as well. I like that it has minimal, wireless controllers for both the screen...

    Lubing an eBike chain

I put the bike in a workstand, same as I would for any other maintenance task. I use a Feedback Sports Ultimate Pro workstand but there are a million options. Just get one that can support a heavier bike.

    DJI motors and ebikes

Not a battery expert, but I think the main issue is they have a shorter overall life, lower capacity to weight and are generally less stable and more prone to thermal runaway. They are great when you need a small battery with the ability to rapidly output lots of power with low sag, and when...

    Lubing an eBike chain

I mean, you don't have to completely lift the bike in the air and flip it over. Just grab the rear brake and walk it backwards (like its doing a wheelie) and rock it back over on the saddle. Computer (or anything else sticking up) can be an issue, but you can put a block down under the ends of...

    Lubing an eBike chain

You can always just flip the bike upside down. Rest it on the saddle and the handlebars, slowly rotate the chain while applying lube. If you're looking for a stand, most good quality stands can support an ebike. My Feedback Sports Pro supports both my ebikes just fine.

    DJI motors and ebikes

More competition is good. Hard to get too excited until they get some bike partners to actually integrate the system into something people can buy. The ebike market is the hot new thing so its hard to say how committed they really are to it long term (like, are they trying to diversify into a...

    Electric Air Pumps 2024

I don't really get the point of the compact electric pumps. I'm almost always inflating at the shop before riding, so I'm using something that plugs in (compressor in my case) or a nice floor pump. For a portable pump I want reliability above all else since I'm only gonna use it in an...

    Ariel Dash - 10kg e-bike

Lugged carbon tubes was how a lot of OG carbon bikes frames were made. In this case, I would imagine they are trying to avoid the expense of developing full carbon molds ($$$$) but still wanted a bit of carbon to show off. Easier to pay a few welders to handbuild titanium at very low volumes...

Do you wear cologne when you ride?

I've never met a roadie who wore cologne while riding, though it may be regional. I know the section of MUP where I used to live had a lot of walkers who wore it. Sometimes you could smell the dude walking down the trail ahead of you for a few minutes before you actually caught him. Some of...

Riding Clothes - In Praise of Clown Suits

Yeah, no idea why you'd wear moto pants on an ebike unless you have an ebike thats basically a motorcycle. Moto pants are designed for high protection (usually aramid/kevlar lining and padding to protect you in a high speed crash). They will be bulky, hot and stiff.

When cycling, do you like listening to music?

Illegal to have them in both ears in Virginia as well. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title46.2/chapter8/section46.2-1078/
