    E-bikes as work vehicles

This summer I used an electric gravel road bike as a bike to get to work events in neighbouring towns. From my base in Vancouver Island BC, I did work trips to Bellingham WA, North Vancouver BC, and Whistler BC. The shortest trip was about 100 km each way, with the trip there and the trip back...

The True Costs of Owning and Using an Electric Bike

Chronic disease often leads to death too. Sometimes quite directly. The first sign of heart disease can be a death-dealing heart attack. Agreed. I'm a lifelong bike commuter (muscle bikes until 2018, e-bikes starting in January 2019) and have never been hit by a car. And yes, a speed bike...

    Hello from the Cowichan Valley

I can't say I do it regularly! But I did do it a few times this year, typically on my way to North Van or to Whistler. I wish I could say I was doing it regularly, as it's a very nice ride!

The True Costs of Owning and Using an Electric Bike

Statistically speaking, your medical expenses should be lower riding an e-bike. One study of commuter cyclists vs. commuter drivers found that (after attempting to control for other factors) the commuter cyclists had about a 40% lower instance of cancer and about a 50% lower instance of heart...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

This is in use by 24 out of 50 U.S. states already: https://peopleforbikes.org/our-work/e-bikes/ So-called "model legislation" (fully embracing the 3 class system) has been passed by states as diverse as California and Texas. This is far from a "left coast rating system". That doesn't mean...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

Isn't a road rider producing 250w and a motor using 750w an entirely different calculation? One is rating power output, and the other part of the measurement of power consumption? Isn't 750w on an e-bike more akin to the number of calories the road rider burned, eg. part of the measurement of...

    Hello from the Cowichan Valley

Hi there, I'm in Langford, just on the other side of the Malahat from you. I was riding a Haibike Race S 6.0 road bike and a Raleigh Tamland iE gravel bike, but I recently started riding a Felt Sport-E electric hybrid. I ride past you every now and then, usually on my way to the Departure Bay...

The True Costs of Owning and Using an Electric Bike

The Canadian Automobile Association (or CAA, the Canadian equivalent of the AAA) estimates that the average cost to own a car in Canada is $9500. Though they also note that the average Canadian underestimates the true cost by about $4000. ;) So $1500 for an e-bike is nothing. @Bedi bedang...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

Agreed. If we're talking an E-MTB from a company that is also a well known and respected maker of mountain muscle bikes (Kona, Norco, Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, BMC, etc.) their E-MTBs are highly likely to have a huge range in the rear. I've also noticed a trend towards more of that...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I have a customer who bought an e-bike and rides to work round-trip (about 30 km) with the assist off the entire way, except for one particularly bad hill where she turns it on, then off again once she crests that hill. So one hill is easier, but for the entire rest of her commute she's riding...

Have you noticed that the vast majority of ebikes are "recreation-focused?"

Getting this thread back on track. We sell a lot of the same e-bikes to recreational cyclists, and to people who are using them for commuters. A step-through e-bike could be something to ride on a local regional trail, or it could have a pannier rack and bags attached to it and used as a road...

Things I learned (or think I've learned) doing e-bike travel this past summer

Oh totally, I absolutely get that. The kind of e-bike travel I've been doing is very speed/efficiency focused, and structured, and not for everyone! And yes, I always travel with just as many chargers as I do batteries. :)

I was engaging you because I respect your experience and your opinion. But by the end I mostly wanted you to give me the benefit of the doubt that I was actually being honest. That could have been the conclusion.

What do you mean that no one does that? I already mentioned that several of the big bicycle brands sold in local bike shops do offer guarantees of minimum number of years for parts availability. Heck, some people criticize SRAM because their minimum parts guarantee is "only" two years after...

Fair enough on every point but the fanboy point. Shimano has done things that has harmed my business (don't even get me started about Chain Reaction). I've been riding e-bikes with Brose and Bosch motors, and SRAM gearing, not a single Shimano product to be seen on them. I listed other brands...

Things I learned (or think I've learned) doing e-bike travel this past summer

Great post. I just wanted to reply to this particular point. With the exception of the e-bike-friendly gran fondo I did, all of my lengthy e-bike trips this summer were work-related. So spontaneity was already off the table. I had specific travel days, and a specific destination, and taking...

Have you noticed that the vast majority of ebikes are "recreation-focused?"

You are incorrect, if I have a problem with a Shimano component on a bike I go to Shimano, not the bike manufacturer. If I talk to Kona or Felt or <fill-in-bike-manufacturer-here> about a Shimano, or a SRAM, or a Schwalbe, or a whatever product, they'll just tell me to talk to that component...

Ah, gotcha. Sending someone a battery could be passing it on via a friend of a friend kind of deal. Sorry for the confusion. I've never mailed a battery, but am aware of the challenges in doing so. :)

This message bothered me enough that I'm replying again. Did I pee in your corn flakes and not realize it? Quick question, do any of the companies you mention have a guaranteed minimum number of years that they'll make spare parts available for their products after taking the product off the...
