    The Poor Man's Battery Saver/Satiator: a $10 Outlet Timer?

I totally agree, I use one myself now thanks to many people on EBR suggesting it (and thanks to all those people!). My question is what to do when I have, say, a 35% charge after a ride, and I intend to ride again the next day. Is it optimal to leave it at 35% for half a day, or optimal to top...

    The Poor Man's Battery Saver/Satiator: a $10 Outlet Timer?

Oh, you're totally right that it's making a relatively small difference. But I'm one of those weirdos who *enjoys* the strategy of it! It's satisfying to me to know that I'm treating my batteries optimally, however large or small the payoff is. :D

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

Yes, if I understood you correctly, your thinking is correct. Hub motors are typically either not geared at all, or geared to an arbitrary ratio (5:1 being most common). Whereas with a mid-drive, when you change gears you're changing what gear the motor is trying to turn over.

First e-bike purchase help! Please :)

There are lots of threads about it here. A very, very, very brief overview of best practices includes: - give the battery at least a half hour or so to come up to room temperature in the winter (or down to room temperature in the summer) before recharging; avoid charging when the battery is...

I must have this product! :D Where did you get it from?! And is there a dog version?

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

My point wasn't that hub motors break spokes all the time, it was the opposite. Hub motor bikes break spokes more frequently, but still only occasionally. Mid-drives break chains even less frequently. So neither is a big issue, yet the mid-drive breaking chains point is brought up...

    Hello from the Cowichan Valley

I don't, but there's a local BionX club in Victoria BC. DM me with your contact info and I'll pass your info on to them, if you'd like.

First e-bike purchase help! Please :)

Looks like a nice ride, enjoy! Now for you to decide if you're just going to "charge and forget" and replace your battery a little more frequently, or engage in a little in the way of best charging practices and replace your battery a little less frequently. :)

    The Poor Man's Battery Saver/Satiator: a $10 Outlet Timer?

I like the idea of plugging it in with a timed charger so that it stays in a lowly charged state until sometime in the early morning (or whenever) the charging kicks in. Genius! Thank you for that suggestion, I'm going to get a charger like that! What's the lowest ideal state for leaving it...

    E-Bike Battery Guide

I suppose your mileage may vary there (pardon the pun), I have customers who have sold their cars and use their e-bikes as their only form of transportation every day! There are likely some e-car owners doing lower mileage than some of my e-bike customers. But in general your statement is...

    The Poor Man's Battery Saver/Satiator: a $10 Outlet Timer?

I would buy a Satiator fron Grin if it supported all my e-bike batteries. It has a Rosenberger plug add-on option which may work with my Brose battery, but then again it may not as Specialized's Brose batteries (which also use the Rosenberger plug) have changed what some of the pins are used...

Is anyone trying to solve charging on the road?

Our single small bicycle shop (not even an e-bike specific shop) has sold 185 e-bikes in the last 12 months. Granted they weren't all Bosch-equipped bikes, but still, we're only a single bike shop out of thousands in North America. No way that there are only 1K Bosch e-bikes in the entire...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I can't and won't argue that if mid-drives are out of your price range, or if you live in a pretty flat area, or that you're a do-it-yourselfer, or that you want an overpowered bike that has lots of tuning options, or probably some other situations that aren't occurring to me at the moment, that...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

Aren't wattage/voltage/amperage ratings part of the calculation of how quickly the motor needs to drain the battery to do what it does, rather than how much power the motor produces? A more efficient motor could be more powerful at a lower wattage than a less efficient motor at a higher...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

In experimenting with different top speeds, there's a huge range hit to higher speeds on an otherwise identical set-up. So a nice option in an appropriate moment. Riding on the highway, which I do regularly, the more I reduce the speed differential between me and the traffic the safer I feel...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

I was pretty stoked when I discovered it was possible to set different top speeds for each level of assist on the E8000 motor, but bummed to learn that to do so you need to void your warranty by using unlicenced software. To me, setting different maximum speeds for each level of assist is a...

People for Bikes: Progress on Ebike Laws in the US

The part that surprises me is that most e-bikes cannot be set to a lower top-speed than their maximum. Maybe I want to set a lower top speed to get longer range on a long e-bike trip, for example. On a muscle bike I used to average about 19 km/h over an 8 hour ride. So I'd be perfectly happy...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I totally agree. I'm amazed at how many people here report experiences where their local shops don't sell e-bikes and/or won't work on them. Our shop's been selling e-bikes since 2003, and in that time has sold complete e-bikes, assisted customers with e-bike conversions, converted e-bikes...

If I understood @Alaskan, he specified that he doesn't prefer to deal with his local REI due to the person who heads up the service department isn't on the same wavelength as him. Seems reasonable to me. Did he say something about REI as a company and I missed it? My main take away from his...
