Anything significantly new/different coming for the 2023 season?

I'm pretty interested in the new CYC Photon for a DIY conversion this summer. Want to see some reviews (especially comparisons to the TSDZ2) before making a final decision. https://www.cycmotor.com/photon

A BBSHD Killer? Here comes the CYC Photon

Golden Motors, a long-time kit seller in Canada (IIRC they're in Mississauga), posted an installation/test ride video recently: So tempted to give this a whirl with a donor bike I have sitting in a garage to replace my current grocery-getter with something more flexible (and not 4" fat...

Any serious review about the recent Orbea Kemen ?

I don't see how the mid frame is an issue, since there's a full frame version available as well. That would be a user preference. :) The removeable battery is the bigger issue. I've been hemming and hawing about possibly getting a Kemen (or maybe an Urrun, and foregoing the mid frame), but the...

Do you regret buying (or not buying) Step-thru vs. Step-over frame?

I can still hoof a leg over the back (when the rear rack isn't loaded down, I often do), but I'm super stocky (barely 29" inseam at 5'8"), so I have zero regrets about a step thru in city traffic.

Has anyone gone from an e-bike with throttle to one without?

Yes, and yes. I'm not anti-throttle, and still own a (Bafang) rear hub with throttle as a mule, but I just prefer the (Shimano) mid-drive with a more natural "bike-like" feel. As a regular commuter, I thought I'd miss the throttle more when I switched, but nope. The only times I've missed the...

Playing Pokemon Go on a bike with 64 phones

It beats sitting around at a casino! :)

    Knister BBQ Grill

Agreed. There's plenty of options that pack down smaller, using all kinds of fuel sources, that would pack down smaller specifically for biking, from folding grills/stoves of varying sizes or even DIY roll up grilles. If you have access to a welder, and an old bike chain, you can even keep it...

    Another class needed?

In the context of e-bikes on trails and land management issues, I'd say even a 20mph limited throttle is "worse" than a pedal assist that goes to 28mph. It's not about speed, so much as it's a lot easier to "chew up the scenery" so to speak (and having done it at the beach, it's kind of fun as...

    Another class needed?

For the kind of bikes/trails being discussed in the SingleTracks article, it's a ridiculous direction to go. They're talking about Class 1 bikes, and Jeff Kendall-Weed's recent video sums up my opinion, and it's appropriately titled... "Why are we so afraid of eMTB?" Long and short of that...

Do ebikes get more flats ?

As someone who rides in the city, the idea of hitting up the gas station for air just makes Schrader marginally more convenient in rare circumstances, especially in the cold. Not that it's a deeply held belief. :)

Do ebikes get more flats ?

It comes with a tube in the bottle that fits over the valve. The cap also has a plastic valve core remover, so in THEORY you don't need anything else. I personally wouldn't trust the plastic core remover though, especially since an aluminum valve core remover is pretty cheap ($5-$10 bucks)

Do ebikes get more flats ?

I wouldn't recommend it. Both use basically the same amount of liquid per tube volume, so you'd be having twice as much gunk sloshing around, and who knows how they react to each other when mixed.

Do ebikes get more flats ?

If you're going with tubes, I'd recommend FlatOut Sportsman formula. It provides more robust puncture protection than Slime, costs less (though there's a markup on it lately) and will last 10+ years before needing to be changed out, probably due to the automotive nature of its origins. Until...

How do you keep rust of your bike/bolts/parts

Probably the be-all end-all of anti-corrosion tests, though Boeshield isn't included (may be a UK thing?) A whole whack of different option, after sitting in a 5% salt water bath for 23 days straight... It's by far the most comprehensive (and independent) test I've seen, as performed by...

Bafang Ultra Owners - Does Your Battery Remaining Percentage Jump Around Under Load?

Haha! We've been calling the first 15 "go-go juice". It's REALLY a world of difference from 100 to 50. So below 35% should be called "no-fun" juice. :D

Bafang Ultra Owners - Does Your Battery Remaining Percentage Jump Around Under Load?

I think the difference is largely in the BMS, and how it delivers power to the motor. I don't know about the Bafang Ultra, but for the Bafang hub bikes I've ridden, they're a lot more punchy when fully charged compared to 50% drained, whereas a Shimano or Bosch motor "feels" the same whether...

DIY 200 Watt Solar Portable Recharging and Emergency Power Station

yeah, since just about any object with a few inches of height can be used to line up the shadow, making a specific contraption strikes me as a bit overkill, especially since most cyclists will have a water bottle handy. :)

Batteries and What do you do when the manufacturer is no more?

Yep, many of the e-bike specific brands seem to use Reention battery cases. Reention seemed to make a name for itself with the Dorado series. http://reention.com/en/gndch/ Heck, even old Silver Fish cases that have been around forever (over a decade) are still available either with batteries...

Wear a helmet and discard the broken and probably old ones

Glad to hear things are better now! I've become more picky about my helmets since switching over to an e-bike. Also been looking at satellite options for next year when I plan on doing some more multi-day trips, especially since I've got a heart condition too, and a couple of routes would have...

DIY 200 Watt Solar Portable Recharging and Emergency Power Station

The beer/pop/can trick is an easy, usually available, hack for optimizing the angle. Rest a (clean and empty :) ) can/mug/bottle (or anything really but circular is best) flat on the panel then tilt the panel so that the shadow is straight down onto the panel, and Bob's yer uncle. Another...
