    Read in a book on the neuroscience of decision making that your brain has a built-in yes-man and a perennial no-man to counter it. These are specific clusters of neurons in different parts of the subcortex. One cluster pitches all the reasons you should go ahead with X while the other...

    A very dangerous question: Wonder if someone will come out with a very lightweight flat-bar bike with the HPR40? My neck's made it quite clear that my drop-bar days are over.

    Digression: If you end up with a bike with a built-in rider power (Pr) display, I think you'll get a lot out of it — even if you never do a day of formal training. My first power meter was built into my current Vado SL 1, and it's been both educational and entertaining. Not the most accurate by...

    Really enjoyed your review. A clarification please: Several times you said that you had level 1 set to X watts and level 2 set to Y watts. Later you said that motor power varies with rider power. All of that would make perfect sense on my Specialized Vado SL if X and Y were just the caps on...

    Chart limitations notwithstanding, I'm very proud to have just squeaked into the bottom line — at least in the 5 min and probably in the FT columns. Hope that qualifies me to at least watch a race. ;^}

    Old guy wants new bike (hopefully).

    Welcome aboard! With all the physical challenges you face now, I think testing is your only path to an ebike that actually meets your very particular needs. I understand the Cube loyalty, but I'd keep an open mind at this early stage. See what local shops have and test anything that looks even...

    No, no, the 38 mm gravel tires obviously aren't for hardcore MTB stuff, but they otherwise do just fine offroad 99% of the time. No problem at all on damp low-tide beach sand.

    I can imagine. Both my bikes have hybrid tires, 38 mm and 2.3". Neither has any chance of staying up in loose sand, let alone making forward progress in it. I know, that's what fatties are for, but I don't have the garage space. If I ever have a hard fall at speed, it's likely to be from...

    Does your wife know that you're out cavorting with Floris? Shortly after we moved to coastal SoCal from Colorado, I took a Coast Highway thrill ride in the first part of a big Pacific winter storm, when it was still mostly just wind. Exhilarating! Then I got to the dip where the highway comes...

    One thing I've learned in my travels: Good pizza is everywhere. Best we ever had was in Nyborg, a little seaside resort town in Denmark. The friendly young Dane behind the counter (owner?) was very serious about his pizza. Also spoke better English than 90% of Americans.

    Excellent! Always wonder how the drawings and technical details needed for a video like this are obtained — e.g., CAD files and the 17.5 reduction. Are you connected with TQ somehow?

    Hipsters aren't allowed in this part of SoCal — not laid back enough. But they might be an improvement over another demographic commonly seen here on cruisers: 50-60 year-old men who really should have worn a shirt.

    Tour de Carlsbad Stage 12: Double Peak Just for fun, started my own solo Tour de Carlsbad about halfway through the recent 2025 Tour de France (TdF). Here's the 12th and final stage to Double Peak and back from 4 days ago. Never guess who won! This was the toughest stage by far, with 2,983 ft...

    Very clever to use a strain wave (aka harmonic) drive to reduce motor shaft speed to crank speed in the smallest possible volume. Don't know about the wear issue raised by @stompandgo , but strain wave drives have other advantages in ebike applications — including high torque capacity. The...

    Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

    Thanks! I'd love to see some of the sources you mentioned. Made my model of the Specialized power-sensing mid-drive PAS by taking their own documentation at face value. And that seems to have produced at least ballpark results for steady-state riding. But c'mon, how could the SL 1.1 motor have...
