Thanks for the feedback. Thinking about this, I have done 1,000s of kilometres touring on outback roads on my Surly Long Haul Trucker with various versions of Schwalbe Marathon tyres of over the years, so something along the lines of the Byways really should work for me.

I am curious about the Byways and how they handle the gravel, including loose, sandy and muddy conditions. The slick centre-line does not translate easily in my mind to good gravel road riding

I have purchased a bottle of Joe's No Flats Super Sealant which is meant to be usable inside tubes. Yet to apply it and see if it helps. My preference is like @rob feature to go tubeless. I will probably do this when I need to fit new tyres. My rims are tubeless ready so an easy change.

All three of my bikes have a single mirror mounted on them. I have not found to date the need to add second, given that I need vision of the side where the traffic is coming from.
