Taking one car off the roads of Silicon Valley

That's a great thing to do - ebikes are a wonderful alternative to cars, especially in places where there's existing bicycling infrastructure and decent weather. Plus, unlike electric cars, they take up less parking, take up less room on the road, and give you exercise to boot. If your...

    Wisper, Emu or Woosh?

I have never heard of any of them either, but wow, those are all awesome names!

    Hunting Ebike Selection

I can't imagine that biking will be quieter than walking. You'd probably want a fat-tire bike (for the mud) with a sealed hub and belt drive for those conditions.

    Haters Lost my Business

I know, I know! But I find it charming. Like @ChezCheese:) I first saw this usage here, and enthusiastically adopted it. (Better than 'analog', which some people use, because that's the opposite of digital, not of electric.) In fact it kind of reminds me of the back-formation 'cisgender'...

Trek Verve+ vs. Giant LaFree E+

I have a belt/Nuvinci bike (the Priority Embark, with mid-drive Bosch motor) and really like the simplicity of the CVT and not having chain maintenance (or chain marks on my legs). But I've only ridden 400 miles so far - had my bike 2 months - so I don't have a lot of experience. I think you...

Best Charging Practice Townie Go/Bosch 400 Battery

This battery guide posted in the 'resources' part of the forums has a lot of very useful information! I also have the Bosch 400. I charge it when I'm down to 1 bar, or if I expect that I don't have enough juice to make my next ride. (I typically ride 7-10 miles when I use it, mostly in eco or...

Study finds that e-bike riders get as much exercise as riders of regular bikes

I was captivated by the term "acoustic bike" which I first saw on this forum, and am doing my best to spread it!

Looking for an e-bike that can help me go car free

I used to commute by (acoustic) cross bike year round in Boulder CO. If the city plows your paths, really the most important thing is not your bike but your attitude and your clothing. 2" tire width will be fine. If you're serious about using your bike as a car replacement, perhaps consider...

    What top speed to get?

I have a mid-drive Bosch (Active Line Plus) and don't notice any motor drag when I pedal faster than the assist limit on long gentle downhills. I do notice motor drag when I pedal with assist off, though, so I suspect it is more noticeable on acceleration at lower speeds rather than on...

Who's ebike riding could ALL be done on a regular bike?

I suspect I'm younger and fitter than most on this forum. I get my exercise primarily from running and mountain biking (on an acoustic bike), and my e-bike is a car replacement, not a bike replacement. When we lived in town I ran errands on foot with a backpack, but when we built a house on...

    What top speed to get?

Don't forget that the top speed of 20/28 is speed with assist. You can still go faster by pedaling. I have a class 1 I use for errands (I work at home and so no commute) but I occasionally do a fun/exercise ride on it. My other bike is an acoustic mtb so even with the extra motor and battery...

Advice on univega summit B 3.0

I used to have a Univega acoustic road bike (ages ago). It's a reputable brand, though I don't know anything about their ebikes. They were bought by the parent company of Raleigh and Nishiki, so it's a fairly big company these days. Looks like that one uses the Bosch Performance Line motor...

    58 miles!

I shouldn't be wimpy - I did a 14.5 mile ride on my acoustic mtb today with 1800' up/down - but somehow the idea of having to pedal my (heavy-ish) e-bike up the big hill home without any power makes me nervous!

    58 miles!

I ride a Priority Embark which has the Bosch Active Line Plus motor and the 400 battery. I made it back home last night after a ride to town to a happy-hour fundraiser, battery clicked down to 1/5 bars left in the middle of the long steep hill on Turbo (highest assist) with a mile and a half to...

step through for a hilly commute

I have the small Embark and it's a low-step, not a step-thru; I'm 5'4" and I suspect you are right that it is too big for you. If it's just a matter of a rack not working with your panniers, you can swap out one or the other for much less than the cost of a bike. Good luck finding something...

step through for a hilly commute

I am surprised that there is such a huge difference between the Active Line motor (which the Verve+ has) and the Active Line Plus (which my Priority Embark has). I live atop a 350' mesa and have no problem getting home with some assist - I use sport mode (3/4) if I'm not carrying groceries...

    Mid drive and pedaling

Thanks for the explanations. I feel lucky that I don't have to ride under dangerous conditions, and that 99% of the drivers here are careful and conscious of cyclists (because we have so many, and they are probably cyclists, too).

    Mid drive and pedaling

Serious question: when do you need a throttle? I've only tried riding one ebike with a throttle/PAS system, and it felt very weird and non-intuitive to me, but it was the first ebike I ever rode and a small-wheel odd geometry to me, so user error/confusion/discomfort was likely a part of it...

    Greetings from Boston!

Boston probably has lots of options for rental and demo, so take advantage and try different brands and styles. When I lived in the Boston area (Somerville near Powderhouse Square) I commuted by bike year-round EXCEPT for January and February, and just got a T pass for those months. When I...
