    Mountain or City Bike

If you get a mountain bike that supports racks, fenders, and lights you can set it up to be a city bike pretty much. I'd suggest going with 27.5 inch wheels. There seems to be a really wide range of tire options in that size. One potential gotcha with a full suspension bike is if you are a...

    Mountain or City Bike

I would say that getting the bike that fits you and the kind of riding you do is more important than picking a bike based on a spec sheet.

Biking trails on the east coast

Probably the biggest trail is the Erie Canalway Trail. It runs along the Erie Canal from Albany all the way to Lockport. Two other major trails around these parts would be the Genesee Valley Greenway and the Lehigh Valley Trail. I'm most familiar with the major trails around Monroe County.

    Limited Edition Aurora

This popped up on YouTube. Looks like the wheels and tires are 27.5 x 3.0 inch instead of 26 x 3.0. That will make it easier to find tubes and tires when it becomes necessary.

What Valid E-bike Complaints have you Heard?

I'll go down the list: 1) All bicycles can damage trail surfaces. Especially something with a knobby tire. I see this all the time on the Erie Canal path. There are ruts all over the place. I didn't put the ruts there, but they are there just the same. 2) Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are about the...

Changing flat on hub drive bike?

Changing the front tire on my Ripcurrent S is no more complicated than any other bike because the front wheel is quick release. The rear wheel requires an 18mm wrench (I keep an adjustable in the rack trunk on the back of my bike) and a hex key to remove the bolt for the torque arm. Depending on...

    Rad miles

Range varies wildly with e-bikes because there are a massive amount of variables that can influence range per charge. Just off the top of my head you have tire type, tire pressure, road surface, rider weight, bike load, how windy it is, how hilly it is, level of pedal assist used, whether you...

ebikes on rail trails from both sides...

I've been in two near misses (one caused me to dump my bike) this summer due to pedestrians with headphones being completely oblivious to their surroundings. That's why I put a horn on my bike. I start with the bell and "on your left/right". If they continue to act oblivious I hit the horn...

Hills or Wind. Which is worse.

Earlier this spring I got caught in a 40mph+ headwind. My RipCurrent S chewed through almost the entire battery (52V 19.2 ah) to get me the 14 miles to get home. So, yeah, headwinds are the worst. Besides, hills have a payoff for the effort of climbing them. Headwinds, not so much unless you are...

    Helmets...Wear Them!!!

I wear a helmet because it seems like a good idea to me. It is one of those pieces of safety gear that I will always have the best available when possible and hope that I never need it for its intended purpose.

    RadCity direct drive motor

In addition to regenerative braking direct drive motors have no moving parts inside to wear out and make no noise (again, no moving parts). They are pretty much a completely "bullet proof" electric motor. The down sides of direct drives is the tend to be physically larger (the distance between...

Got harrassed on the trail today

Oddly enough the only problem cyclists I've encountered were on race bikes in full lycra on a busy canal trail. My issue with those two was their absolutely abysmal trail etiquette which ended up contributing to me dumping my bike. Their terrible etiquette applied to everyone around them...

    Go For $$ Or Not?

As somebody that stepped up from a RadCity to a RipCurrent S here has been my general impressions. Rad Power Bikes makes an excellent package regardless of form factor (the minis, city bikes, rover, etc). It is a very compelling, affordable, and complete package for somebody looking to test the...

Who's ebike riding could ALL be done on a regular bike?

What difference does it make what kind of bike I'm riding as long as I'm out, enjoying myself, and turning the cranks?

Another twist to throttle vs PAS ebikes....Comments wanted...

Based entirely on my riding experiences this summer I find the entire debate around a throttle as missing the forest for the trees. My bike goes the same speed whether or not I'm helping it on the flat and that top speed is 20mph PAS or 20mph throttle. It gets to the same top speed in the same...

Is it bad to use highest pedal assist a lot?

The only motor system I can think of that might have any direct impact on freewheeling is a direct drive motor. Geared motors and mid-drives are going to free-wheel just like any other normal bike. Direct drive motors do regenerative braking and do add some drag during free-wheeling. Even if you...

So, how many miles do you get on a charge?

The longest distance I've done in a day is 36.4 miles with mixed levels of assist (mostly 1, some S) on my Juiced Bikes RipCurrent-S with my full commuter load (panniers, water, tools, and stuff) over two rides. I still had something like 30%-40% of the battery left when I got home. I'm a member...

    Bike class restrictions

Functionally the only difference between a class 1 e-bike and a class 2 e-bike is the class 2 e-bike has a throttle. The maximum speed the motor will propel you is 20 mph (In the US, different rules for maximum speed vary by country). Whether under pedal assist or with a throttle the motor caps...
