25km/h? 32? 45? 60? What speed do you *actually* want on your e-bike?

I wear eye protection on every bike ride, but I don't wear goggles. I've gone as fast as 75 km/h on my muscle bike going down a steep hill, wearing only sunglasses as protection. These days I use a Bell Star Pro helmet which has an integrated face shield, though. That's a winner, for me.

What is your current e-bike, and what do you hope will be your next?

My second (purely recreational) e-bike is a Haibike XDURO Race S 6.0. I've been giving some thought as to whether to replace it with the BMC AMP drop bar road bike, or to give up on both of them and go with only one bike only. I have decided that I do want all my bikes to use the same battery...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

In many countries, many women do time in the armed forces too. What's your point? Not everyone can or should do a stint in military service, IMO. Joining the Canadian Forces isn't something that appealed to me, and I don't think that put the country in jeopardy. And I don't think I ever once...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

That wasn't my point. My point is that bikes are getting more torque on a per-watt basis *within* the current legal limits. Agreed. I can only reiterate that I'm trying to guess the perspective regulators have, not sharing my personal opinion. Throttles may give more immediate access to...

    Ebikes green?

'Tis true. Luckily, in Canada most of our electricity is produced by hydro electric. That's not without an environmental footprint of a different sort (land has to be flooded, etc.), but it's a much lesser one. And Canada does sell a fair chunk of power to the U.S., as well. But two things...

    Ebikes green?

It's less about there being 7.7 billion people, and more what those people do. Demographic models suggest that the world's population is likely to top out at 9.5 billion, give or take. As infant mortality drops around the world, and as the world urbanizes, and as we have more two-income...

    Ebikes green?

I'm sure what you say is true of some people, but I know lots of people who lead by example and lead very low-waste lives, including not using many gadgets (disposable or otherwise). Your statement suggests they're all that way, and I know that's not true. But your argument is self-defeating...

    Ebikes green?

I heard it on the radio, so I don't have a link. But it makes sense to me. Manufacturing keeps getting more energy efficient, and is a one-time thing. Shipping by these ever-more-massive container ships is reducing the transportation footprint of each individual item aboard, and is a one-time...

    Ebikes green?

A recent study looked at the energy used to manufacture, transport, and operate things. The overwhelming proportion of the total energy comes from operating things. Yes there is an environmental footprint beyond just energy use. But it does suggest that, at least some of the time, it does...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

You quoted and replied to me as if I were making that argument, that is the difference in context I was pointing to. I was (and am) merely speculating that this is the way regulators are looking at it. It's not how I look at it. That is true of both of the things you said in response here.

What is your current e-bike, and what do you hope will be your next?

My current commuting/long haul e-bike is a Felt Sport-E (https://feltbicycles.com/products/sport-e-50-s-electric-e-bike). It's a "trekking" bike with heavy puncture resistant tires. The tires are Schwalbe Energizer Pros, and are so beefy that swapping the stock tires to Energizer Pros on a...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I think you meant to address this to someone else, I've never been in the military, and I'm a merely passable swimmer. :)

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

You quoted me out of context. I said that in the context of *future* class-2 e-bikes, nothing currently on the market today. I also was suggesting that the throttle-only difference between class 1 and class 2 was an important difference in this regard to people writing the regulations. I...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I haven't quoted everything you said because I agree with most of it, but I did want to address a few points. The debate between hub motors and mid-drives is hardly a new one, there are patents for each of them dating back to the late 1800s. Both have gone through a whole lot of starts and...

What is your current e-bike, and what do you hope will be your next?

Some of you may have an e-bike that you plan to own, maintain, and enjoy for years to come. If so, that's awesome! For those of us who have an e-bike in mind to replace their current one: which is your current e-bike, what do you have your eye on as your next e-bike, and why?

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

I believe, from a legal standpoint, they are attempting to distinguish between bikes that you can pedal vs. bikes that you must pedal. Right now many jurisdictions have poor definition of what an e-bike is. Is an e-bike something that looks like a Vespa scooter but has pedals in the back where...

My Thoughts on Mid Drive..Hub Drive and Throttle

For me, no. I can't argue with @BBassett's point that having one and not using it is better than not having it and wishing you did. Absolutely, I cannot and will not argue against that, that makes perfect sense. But if I were looking for an e-bike, I would not specifically look for one with a...

Will ebikes really lead the EV revolution?

There are times when I would pay $5, or even more! They're doing the labour, taking the inventory risk, paying the rent for the space, the staff wages, etc. If there was more consistency in battery packs from one e-bike to the next, this could be a good business opportunity. However, the...

25km/h? 32? 45? 60? What speed do you *actually* want on your e-bike?

There are some moments, such as crossing a turn lane on a highway, where the faster I can go the safer I am. I have a 60 km/h mode that I mostly use in situations like that, when reducing the speed differential between me and the cars is safer for everyone concerned.

    I can't argue with that, @BBassett. :)
