    Why buying a Stromer?

Isn't this like many/most mid-drive motors? A mid-drive has as many gears as the bike has, and mid-drives typically reward higher cadence and harder pedalling with more oomph. What you're describing sounds exactly like how I'd describe every e-bike I've ever owned.

Steps E6000 W012 (torque) error -- fix & keep, or return?

I'm glad the worst is hopefully behind you! Trek sells mostly Bosch, but some Shimano. Specialized is using entirely Brose motors these days, but motors made to Specialized's requirements rather than off-the-shelf units. Giant is using Yamaha exclusively. Many of the smaller traditional LBS...

    Why buying a Stromer?

Well, that's good then. That's something I'll be looking for in all future bikes. I wonder if Stromer allows importing class 3 e-bikes into Canada? Many other companies that make them won't (Trek, Specialized, etc.), since most provinces have no legal framework for anything other than class 1...

    Why buying a Stromer?

Is it possible to set different PAS levels to different max speeds on a Stromer? How about changing how much torque/assist percentage/wattage is used for each level of assist? I've become used to individually tuning each level of assist on my current bike, and I wouldn't be excited to give...

External vs Integrated battery packs - which do you prefer and why?

Good suggestion for using a case when carrying a battery in a pannier. When carrying a spare battery I typically use both panniers (on the side of the rack) and a trunk bag (on top of the rack). Taking advantage of the small size of semi-integrated battery packs, I put it in the trunk bag on...

External vs Integrated battery packs - which do you prefer and why?

Actually, this is a very interesting point. For those people who have to leave their e-bike in a shed (or other non-climate controlled environment), an external or semi-external battery pack is usually trivial to disconnect and bring inside. However, a fully integrated pack is often more of a...

    Why buying a Stromer?

A pedal assist bike is partly as fast as the rider, since (with apologies to the old 'Centurions' toy line) it's "Man and machine, power Xtreme". I'm only able to maintain 45+ km/h on flat ground (or very slight uphills) by pedalling hard while clipped in to the pedals. Even at that, it...

External vs Integrated battery packs - which do you prefer and why?

I agree that fully integrated battery packs offer better weight distribution and protection than a fully external battery. I'm not sure they're substantially better than a semi-integrated battery, though. Being inside the main triangle protects the battery sufficiently well in my experience...

    Why not speed limits?

I'd be fine with that. I do that myself. I've set my lowest level of pedal assist to a max of 32 km/h, and I use that on trails (a legal requirement on regional trails here). I've set the medium level to max power assist of 38 km/h, and use that on city streets. I've set the highest level to...

External vs Integrated battery packs - which do you prefer and why?

Is there a significant aerodynamic advantage to an internal battery vs. a semi-integrated battery with rounded edges tucked inside the main triangle, though? I'm not sure that there is. If there is, I suspect that it'll be very minor. Any other performance advantages you can point to?

    Why not speed limits?

I don't think that they're entirely toothless. If you are involved in an at-fault accident (such as you t-bone a car with your e-bike), and if you are riding an e-bike that runs afoul of the regulations, I think that fact could suddenly become very important and enforceable.

    Why not speed limits?

A long time ago, the comic book industry (facing criticism over their content destroying our youth, and the prospect of government regulation) chose to regulate itself by creating the "Comics Code Authority". Decades later, the video game industry (facing criticism over their content destroying...

Solid State Batteries - deep-dive discussion video w/ Sean Mitchell of All Things EV

You seemed to start talking about power grids in general, and now you're talking about U.S. grids in specific. Maybe that's a U.S. problem? In Canada our power grids seem up to the task, the majority of our power is generated by hydro-electric and other renewables, and we even sell significant...

Solid State Batteries - deep-dive discussion video w/ Sean Mitchell of All Things EV

Part of this discussion is about recycling old batteries. It may be a very, very long time before I do that. As the battery capacity gradually drops on older packs I'll probably purchase newer ones, but as long as they hold a charge I'll probably keep using the older packs too. Using older...

External vs Integrated battery packs - which do you prefer and why?

$600? Wow, that's a heck of a premium if they're otherwise very similar bikes. Dang. The two I posted earlier, the Opus Connect LRT and Connect LRTi, are $380 different. For that $380 you're getting three things: integrated battery, an increase from 418 Wh to 504 Wh pack, and an upgrade from...

Integrated plus external I can get behind! Awesome idea. I wish this was an option on more bikes.

I hadn't clued in to the fact that integrated batteries can't always be charged off the bike. Huh, good point. You're absolutely right, that would be a total deal breaker for me too. Generally I charge indoors and on the bike, but when travelling I sometimes charge off the bike. I'm looking...

Oh for sure. I just have noticed a strong trend towards integrated battery packs, and was curious about EBR forum members felt about this trend. :)
