Experience Thread: A noobie getting into a specialized vado 5.0 IGH

As Stephan knows I‘ve been facing the same issues for quite a while. I’ve resolved it to some extent by recognizing my actual needs. I’ve ended up using the Specialized TCD on my 2020 Vado SL 4 for monitoring during rides. I either run the Strava or Ride with GPA apps on my Apple Watch to track...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Thanks for the comments on the Bridge Sport! I’ve been looking at other saddles that have a larger cut out to protect my senior perineum. While doing the research I’ve also been adjusting the bike and my riding position and have found that my issues aren’t as significant. The Bridge saddle is...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I hadn’t looked at it that way. 25 km/h is essentially my cruising speed here in Virginia. Not much effort required. The 45 km/h assist limit on cycling trails here in the USA does make more sense since most local road bike riders appear to easily ride at least that fast. I’m only faster up...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I’m in the USA so share the experience at higher speeds. I bought my Vado SL to be able to ride the longer distances my local routes require. Distances I couldn’t ride one my analog bike. I was riding that analog bike at average speeds of 12-14 mph. I ride the SL at 14-16. This is faster than...

    Inclement Weather E-Biking

I‘m more challenged. 40 degrees is my lower limit. 45 is better, though I might start out in the morning at a lower temp. Don’t ride in rain if I can help it. don't go out if there snow or ice around. I’m 74 and much more cautious than I once was.

Response from Specialized re- Ride App Functionality

Refreshing. For several reasons. It’s rare for a company to admit it’s product isn’t as good as a competitor’. It’s even more rare for Specialized to reply to a customer request. Quickly or otherwise.

    Turbo Connect Display Update Mode

On the pre-2022 models Specialized‘s technology was not sophisticated enough to handle owner updates. It’s getting there with the new hardware and software. Unfortunately, there’s not upgrade path for the electronics yet.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Yeah, the Apple Watch needs to be charged about 3 dry 18 hours. If you want to use the watch for sleep monitoring, Apple suggests charging in the morning after you wake up but before you start your day. With the right charger the watch charges pretty fast so this does work. But both the watch...

Why does it seem Vado owners are getting KINEKT 2.1 vs Redshift Seat Post ?

It’s like magic! I wish I knew the same sorcerer.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I run Strava from my Apple Watch Series 4 and the watch charge declines significantly. My iPhone battery also runs down quickly if I’m using it for navigation, etc. I carry a power bank (battery powered charger) which I can fit in my phone holder for the time it takes to recharge the phone. For...

Thanks for the information and the link. Very reassuring. Now I just have to wait for the back order situation to resolve in a month or two. Then I can try it out.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I’ve been coming back to getting the shock stop since I’m riding much more gravel and the bumps hurt my elbows and shoulders. For my current setup, I have an extended that raises the handlebars 3 or 4 inches. My new specialized dealer LBS says, and I’ve come to agree, that the extender makes...

Lock the crank to lube chain - tool

FWIW, the Park Tools chain cleaner is designed to be used with chain turning in either direction. I prop my Vado Sl up on a rear wheel stand and move it forward. I also use Rock&Roll which seems to help with keeping the drive chain clean. I can go several dusty gravel rides between real cleaning.

I agree, though I have the scabs on my shins from the Stamp 1 pedals from sudden stops from riding in the city (DC) with my ebike group on a very touristy Saturday

Mission Control-Smart Control, my experience (today)

I used Smart Control a few times when I first got the bike and was experimenting. It definitely worked as far as battery life was concerned, but it too frequently didn’t match the assist to the conditions. My typical ride is on a rail trail with one rolling hills. These are not very steep' but 2...

Heres some real world ebike motor data.

The challenge of a speed limit on a bike trail reminds me of when I lived in Jerome, Arizona in the late 1960’s. To get to town, motorists need to climb a steep twisty road with a speed limit of 15 mph. Many of the cars of the day couldn’t reach the top of the hill if they started at 15 mph. The...

I can’t answer many of your questions, but I can let you know that you can’t get these two items nor would it be worth it as they would probably be more expensive than the difference between the 4 and the 5. I believe a 1x12 drivetrain is possible. I may update from the ten to 11 or even 12 on...

How fast is too fast for you?

My average speeds are in the 14-16 mph range. There are a couple of spots on my usual route where I can go 24-26 For a few hundred yards, but traffic and immediate climbs keep it short. I’ve had rides where I can go around 20 for a while, but it’s rare. I do have a stretch when I‘m really home...
