Were You Moving Away From E-Bikes, What Traditional Bicycle Would You Buy?

Titanium can be more flexible than desired, but it depends a lot on the alloy and tube shape. I was approximately 165 pounds when I had my Litespeed Ultimate, (a 2003 model). It was plenty stiff where it needed to be, but it had nice vertical compliance. I could hammer pretty hard back then...

Were You Moving Away From E-Bikes, What Traditional Bicycle Would You Buy?

Point taken. A good gravel bike can also be ridden on the road as well and will help to improve strength and endurance. Here in northern New England our roads are far from perfect and far from boring, but I understand and respect your perspective. I rode a lot in the Czech Republic and the...

Were You Moving Away From E-Bikes, What Traditional Bicycle Would You Buy?

For what it’s worth, I always found that road cycling provided the best endurance and strength building workout. A lightweight road bike with good gearing and carefully chosen terrain will probably do the most to get you into the condition that you seek, (sub compact crank and an 11x32 cassette...

Were You Moving Away From E-Bikes, What Traditional Bicycle Would You Buy?

I brought both a Wilier Carbon road bike and a Yamaha Cross Core to Acadia National Park in early October. I wanted to ride the Park Loop Road on the traditional road bike and use the ebike on the carriage roads. The Loop Road is a little more than 31 miles including Cadillac Mountain. I have...

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Our foliage is coming along, but peek is probably still about a week away. Yesterday, October 4th was in the mis 80s, (I think that was a record). The images are from my GoPro and taken on the road that connects Tyson and Reading Vermont. The ten mile road ascends and descends approximately...

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

The route in the video was not the carriage roads, (they are packed gravel). After this ride I took my eBike out to the Carriage Roads that the Rockefellers built and rode another 34 miles). The Carriage Roads are nice, but the Park Loop road and Cadillac Mountain are the thing that I come...

Thanks. It’s a magical place and I can’t take credit for the scenery or the first three tunes. The last tune was an iPhone recording of me playing my Martin 000-28. It wasn’t the best and the iPhone is a poor recording studio, but the length of the tune fit and seemed to work so in it went.

SRAM has a new ebike drivetrain.

Probably not for me, but it appears to be a worthwhile progression. https://www.bikeradar.com/news/sram-eagle-powertrain/?image=2&type=gallery&gallery=0&embedded_slideshow=0

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

The Park Loop road in Acadia is one of my favorite rides. I rode it on Tuesday and had a GoPro on my chest. The bike is my Wilier GT-S Carbon road bike, (not my eBike). There was still some smoke in the air from the Canadian wild fires, so the sky is not a bright blue. The ride, including...

    E-Bikes On Legal, Paved Trails

I am up in Acadia and will ride the carriage roads on my class 1 ebike tomorrow afternoon. I suspect that there will be a wide variety of bikes and I doubt that anyone will care that I am on an ebike, (and it’s too bad if they do). I will ride the 30 mile park loop and up Cadillac Mountain in...

    RIP AHicks aka Alan Hicks

RIP. It sounds like he had a life well lived. I hope that his friends and loved ones can find comfort in that.

Wear a helmet and discard the broken and probably old ones

I am glad that you had a good helmet and good support that day. We have an epidemic of bareheaded motorcyclists on this side of the pond. Nobody looks cool after a traumatic brain injury. You can’t change human nature. Ride safe my friend.

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

My wife and I decided to drive up to Burlington on Friday and revisit the Island Line Trail. The Local Motion ferry that crosses the 200’ gap only runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Labor Day until Indigenous People Day, so Friday seemed to be the best day. We had a good meal on Grand...

Glad for your graceful dismount over the bars Stefan. In the words of Pee Wee Herman, “I meant to do that”. Any ride that you can walk away from is a good one.

This is the Blow Me Down Mill in Cornish New Hampshire. You might recognize the artist’s names. It’s a great area to call home.

    Cycling Shorts?

Good quality shorts and jerseys last a long time, (I wear bids instead of shorts). My favorite jersey is nearly 20 years old. Hand wash and air dry. I also prefer to have a variety of bibs so that I avoid hot spots.

I have never seen so many turtles in the road. I came across this medium sized snapper yesterday. I could not convince him to stay out of the road. The little snapper and the wood turtle are from earlier rides. We had no rain in May, but we had flooding and record rain in June and July...

2023 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Between floods, washed out roads and wildfire smoke, the season hasn’t been very photogenic around here. I took this footage a couple days ago on a forty miler. Nothing too special, but I always find Vermont to have lots of charm and a detour allowed me to explore a bit.

    Music Junkies?

I have never listened to music when riding. Distractions can get you hurt or killed. Riding is pretty stimulating all by itself.
