15 MPH E-bike and Scooter speed limit announced for NY City by Mayor Adams

I mean, euro law on ebikes is interesting but definitely not applicable in the US. :p As far as I can see, New York has its own (slightly weird) laws on ebikes. https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/electric-scooters-and-bicycles-and-other-unregistered-vehicles While class 1 and 2 are standard in the...

15 MPH E-bike and Scooter speed limit announced for NY City by Mayor Adams

I certainly know people who have done commutes of that distance on conventional bikes. Its not what I like or not, if they don't meet the legal definition of an ebike (whatever the legal definition is in your jurisdiction) they are motorcycles. Or at least not ebikes. As much as people like...

15 MPH E-bike and Scooter speed limit announced for NY City by Mayor Adams

I commuted for 15 years on a non electric bike, on a variety of roads and paths and rarely averaged much above 15mph and was completely fine. My commute was 22 miles round trip for much of that. I don't personally buy that ebikes only work if they are turned into motor vehicles; the point of...

15 MPH E-bike and Scooter speed limit announced for NY City by Mayor Adams

Oh I get it. It sucks that ebike riders who actually follow the rules are getting caught up in the blowback (which seems almost entirely aimed at emotos pretending to be ebikes). But that is a predictable outcome when the general populace isnt really able to differentiate between an actual...

15 MPH E-bike and Scooter speed limit announced for NY City by Mayor Adams

Don't know if it will pass and what enforcement would look like, but the main takeaway IMO is that ebikes have become so unpopular with the general populace in NYC that going after them this directly seems like good politics.

Should I consider buying an ebike from a LBS that is located 6 hours away

If you have a Giant dealer who is closer (especially if you like them) you can stop in and ask about that model/size and see what they can do. They may be able to contact the other shop and swap inventory (less likely if its a clearance bike but you never know). Or maybe offer you an...

Test Rode Cervelo Rouvida Road vs Trek Domane+ AL 5 Today. My Analysis

I think its safe to assume that most of what you read on torque and power specs was probably written by a marketer, not an engineer. And theres a lot more to a motor system than peak torque/power/whatever. I would be wary of saying "I rode a bike I liked that said it had 50nm of torque so that...

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

Moto/4x4 trails have existed for a long time, and bikes like the Surron/Talaria would be great on them! But if you mean new moto trails at places that only have hiking and MTB trails, no, probably not. Most managing agencies and volunteers from other user groups have been fighting motos...

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

I've known people who swear by wool jerseys, even year round. I've always hated the texture of wool so have never tried them. But they are reasonably popular; some of the bike clubs near me do a wool option for their jersey occasionally.

Wahoo ELEMNT vs. Garmin EDGE (as E-Bike GPS Displays)

The most miserable ride I ever did was a 50ish mile road ride with a bunch of friends. Weather was forecasted to be relatively warm and sunny, but we got to the 25 mile point and a sudden cold front and storm rolled in. Temps dropped like 20 degrees and it absolutely poured on us. I barely...

Wahoo ELEMNT vs. Garmin EDGE (as E-Bike GPS Displays)

If I brought extra layers I'm putting them on when I feel cold, not when the computer says the temp has dropped. If I didn't bring extra layers I'm SOL no matter what the computer is saying.

Wahoo ELEMNT vs. Garmin EDGE (as E-Bike GPS Displays)

Personally the only time weather info is really useful is before I ride, so I know what to wear and whether to bring extra layers. Once I'm on the bike, eh, I'm experiencing the weather and knowing the exact air temp isn't useful info anymore. I don't need the computer to tell me if if its...

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

Shunning lycra while riding a bike for exercise is more of a statement than actually wearing it. Wear what you like, but most people who actually go out and exercise on a bike (electric or not) wear it because its the best thing to wear if you're riding a bike for exercise.

Wahoo ELEMNT vs. Garmin EDGE (as E-Bike GPS Displays)

I checked my 530 just out of curiosity, and it says 72 in my office which is actually 69 or so. So it reads 3f high, which is 1.5c? I've never had temp on any of my data screens. I guess if thermometer accuracy on a ride is important to you, get a wahoo. I personally just look at national...

Wahoo ELEMNT vs. Garmin EDGE (as E-Bike GPS Displays)

Thermometer and barometer are two sensors that are more "general sense of what they are measuring" on any bike computer IME. They've gotten better over the years, but have never been super accurate. If the computer is in the sun it will read much higher than ambient anyway.

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

The roadie hate here is annoying. The irony is that the way many people here complain about roadies is pretty much exactly how many other user groups talk about ebikers. Entitled, shouldn't be on the trail, go too fast, etc etc. I've been riding the local MUP for 23 years now. No group...

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

There will always be people who break the law, but thats not an argument for not having laws. Not sure what you mean by trouble for other people. The licensing for motorcycles has been around for my entire lifetime. All thats really changed is we added some laws around ebikes that said if...

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

I don't think any state allows motorcycles on MUPs. Just noting that if all you want to do is ride roads, you just need to meet the definition of a motorcycle in your states code and register/plate it and you can have as much power as you want and ride as fast as the law allows on roads. If...

If only there was an existing class of 2 wheeled vehicles that are allowed on all public roads and have no power or speed restrictions! :p

The Future of eBikes: How Fast is Too Fast?

You're much more likely to lose the liability battle if you're riding a bike that isn't actually legal to be ridden where you were riding it. Its also much more likely that whatever umbrella insurance you have (homeowners or renters or whatever) will deny any coverage.
