The 7-speed is supposedly the most reliable of the Shimano IGH line. I've been commuting with one driven by a BBS02 for 4 years. Perfect for the street, never find myself in need of more gears. Being able to shift at a standstill is a great luxury in city traffic.

Totally agree. I have a bicycle I really like, and would love to add assist to it without affecting it's basic goodness. All of the e-bikes I've ridden (including mine) just weren't really excellent bicycles, and for 3x - 4x the money of a really good pedal bike. It's been such a long wait...

If you're considering that ebay gizmo, you might as well consider going straight to a road-legal electric motorcycle: Zero Motorcycles. Harley claims they will be releasing a full electric bike in 2019 as well.
