Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

I ride that trail 3 to 4 times per week as part of a 15 mile fitness loop. I notice that a lot of people don't seem very friendly either. I think a lot of the bikers are perhaps preoccupied with their ride, and don't think to be friendly. Just keep saying hello with a smile and they will come...

Do you/would you prefer the throttle on the right side?

I've owned 15 motorcycles and always thought I would prefer a twist throttle on the right. But after owning an e-bike with a thumb throttle on the left, this is where I like it. Does not interfere with gear shifter on the right and I only use the throttle for starts from zero and occasional...

How does Ride1Up Produce Better Ebikes with less cost and effort than established rivals (eg Juiced)?

I may not be following it as closely as you, but I think the R1U issues were mostly start up problems with the torque sensor model Limited. I have a R1U 500 with 1200 trouble free miles, one data point, I know. My wife has a Espin Flow. Both bikes are similar quality and both are excellent value.

    Best Choice for Entry-Level Ebike?

Oh, I forgot about the Aventon Pace ! Almost perfect for the OP's mission and requirements. In fact at 150 lbs, the 350 would be more than adequate. Only thing missing is throttle from standstill, but many owners have learned to cope with that. The Aventon Pace 350 and 500 are among the easiest...

    Best Choice for Entry-Level Ebike?

I have a ride1up 500 and a Espin Flow for my wife. 1200 miles on the R1U so far and only lubed chain and add air. We are happy with both bikes. On my R1U, I get 40 to 80 miles range on a charge. Because the bike is easy to pedal with no assist, I find myself only using assist about 1/3 of the...

Will you let your ebike take you 'where you don't belong' ???

Attempted my first very short single track on my Allant+7.

At 54 lbs (and up), I wonder how realistic it is to do anything other than easy trails on an e-bike? My e-bike is also 55 lbs, and I find it difficult to do anything but the easy trails, but I'm also 76, so maybe I've lost my nerve?

Will you let your ebike take you 'where you don't belong' ???

Well my story is a bit lame compared to much of what I've read here, but in the interest of Mike's original post ... "will you let your e-bike take you where you don't belong? " .... I found myself today on a single track trail that at 76, I had no business being on. When I sold all my non...

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

The all terrain tires (Schwab Marathon Plus 27.5x2.25) and larger platform pedals made the difference for me. 🙂 I was able to do the trail shown below, which I was not comfortable with before the changes. (The Kenda Kwick Seven.5 (27.5"x2.2) tires that came with my Ride1up 500 look smaller in...

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

Well, as the OP, I wanted to thank each of you for the comments and suggestions, and perhaps close out this thread. I rented a non-electric MTB today for $30, and tried it out on my usual fitness loop. At the first hill, I realized why I sold all my regular bikes and purchased an e-bike, LOL. I...

bike stand for maintenance for an ebike

I've never owned a bike stand. Always hung my bikes from the garage door tracks using tie down straps. One hook in the track and wrap the other around the frame. Works great.

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

Both look like great tires, probably can't go wrong with either for all terrain. It does look like the Smart Sam has a single, continuous bead around the middle, which makes me think it might be a bit better on pavement than the Smart Plus where the center is more of an s pattern ?

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

The tires in (my) post #14 are what I have on the bike now. I was thinking along your thought for an uninterrupted bead along the middle, but some knobs on the sides. Just can't remember the brand, but I know I had them on previous bikes and they were fine on pavement and not bad on dirt.

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

I agree, the tires look pretty much street oreinted as the ride1up 500 is basically a commuter bike. Kenda Kwick Seven.5 27.5"x2.2" (650b)

Advice for older man wanting to get back on the trails

Thanks Timpo and Ahicks. I'll probably put 2500 miles on my e-bike this year, mostly on a 18 mile fitness loop that I do here in Prescott, half highway shoulder and half rails to trails path. This weekend I was up in an area where I was exploring several forest roads and some fairly easy, single...
