My guess is that the batteries for Active and Performance are interchangeable and there is some sort of verification protocol. However, unless it's encrypted, someone will hack it.

I suppose when the battery is attached to the bike there are some parasitic losses through the motor...hence the topping off phenomena. I see it too. Battery charger might be a little too sensitive.

Interesting....I think we can assume the sensor is not providing any input and the system goes into "limp home mode" which apparently doesn't include the limp! I'll move the sensor on my bike and see what happens this weekend

Are there STEPS configs that can act as a normal bike without the battery? Personally, I think requiring a battery is a bad idea, actually really bad. Simply forgetting to charge your battery could screw-up your plans, never mind all the other issues that can occur. I want to see more...

Interesting: I assume you have Bosch Performance line. I have Bosch Active Line. I have 15 mile roundtrip with about 500' I go 2 trips before before charging. I think I could go 3 trips. I tend to put it in Tour mode. Since mine cuts out at 15 mph, it isn't active that much going to work...
