As I said this bike is for retirement in Tennessee in 7 years. I'd like one now but can wait, I need this bike to last me well into retirement so that's another 30 years (hopefully). If I can get a bike now that'd be great but it's just not as much of a priority in getting a better, cheaper...

Hey everyone, I wanted to stop by to give an update. Convinced a mid-drive is the way to go I went to the HaiBike link and found a dealer not too far away. I called to see if I could do a test ride and was told they do not have any in stock, they order on demand as they are purchased. Makes...

Yeah I went in to this thing thinking 2 grand, then I saw good reviews on bikes way less and that led me here. I still go back to my timeline and the belief that advancements will change things down the road and hopefully cheaper and more power. The conversion idea is a thought. My Giant is...

I'd love to follow this advice but again you are saying nothing about Biktrix in this post, you said "ebikes.ca". Is Biktrix the link that will give me the tools to calculate the power I would need? thanks

I'll bump this post from the previous page as it was obviously missed. But this is not a hard number, just what I'd ideally like to spend.

Can you supply the link again, I think there was a typo on this post. Another thing I noticed is the specs rarely mention "mid-drive" when they list the motor. The link above said something like "in frame motor" or whatever. When it's a hub motor it's listed, almost as if that's a good thing.

What about a throttle? Would I not use that to climb hills? Does the throttle work with the human power and gives you more of a boost than the pedal assistance? What names should I look at for affordable, good mid-drives?

This is a great post, thanks for the help. As I said climbing hills is a requirement and as this bike will take me into retirement I will need the help from the bike more and more as I get older. You guys know better than I do and the universal opinion is mid-drive will be needed for a guy my...

These were very interesting articles, yet they just add to my confusion. Many reference watts as the measuring stick, and sadly my situation would call for 1,000 watts. They seem to indicate watts are what to look at but I'm told here it's about hub vs mid-drive not watts. The articles didn't...

So just to be clear even a 750 W hub drive won't be strong enough to get 240 pounds up a steep hill? I really need a hub drive? If that's the case I may as well forget this idea for a few years, the prices may come down and we can pay off our newly finished bathroom. Just saw Thomas' last...

As I said I don't want to convert my bike, I want to start new and keep my existing bike to travel to the beach with. Currently we live in Maryland, on the edge of Appalachia and our road is extremely hilly. The move is to the mountains of Tennessee so climbing hills, not speed or range, is...

Really struggling to find any mid drives in my price range. Every single one was a hub drive. Would this be an example of the advantages of waiting a few years?

So the Volts is more for speed and range but not torque to get up a hill? Yes I have a bike a Giant hybrid. It is very comfortable once I added extenders to the handle bars that allow me to sit more upright. Before that I had to sit up and ride no hands (not hard obviously) to give my back...

OK pardon my ignorance on electronics but nowhere did the specs show amps, unless I missed it. I just read motor watts and battery volts. So is a 500 W motor with a 48 volt battery more powerful than the same 500 W with a 36 V? Or has that 750 W motor already used the volts and amps to come...

Last two posts were interesting. I looked at RedRover and found 750 W and 48v with throttle option and great customer service for $1,500, sounds like a great deal. Why do you prefer fat tires? I still don't have a handle on 36 V vs 48V, is t just range or does 48V boost power? Thomas hit...

I think you answered my question at the end, voltage has to deal with range and not power? That is odd as I know the difference in the torque of a cordless drill between 18V and 36V. Shocked to learn my wife may be interested as she looked over my shoulder as I was noodling online last...

Yeah I had a similar story. I was with my wife driving down a really steep hill and we were passed by a couple about your age riding their bikes straight up that hill like they were peddling on the boardwalk. I looked at my wife and said "what the Hell was that?". That was my introduction...

Thanks again for the replies. More Noob questions: How exactly dose a mid-drive motor work and what makes it so much more efficient than a hub motor? Is the motor the only thing that determines power and torque or does the voltage of the batter matter as well? At my size and the need for...
