What are your favorite Rohloff gears

For riding around town, with stop and go traffic, I usually cycle between 8 and 11. On the open road I seem to max out at 12 with the CX motor. When I anticipate a steep grade I try to aim for gear 5. So we seem to be in the same range of gears.

What are your favorite Rohloff gears

After spending a few months using the Rohloff E-14 my favorite gears are 5, 8, 11 with my start gear being 8. What are your favorite?

Nevo GX Rohloff as touring bike

We called ahead and asked if the bikes could be put in out room. The room assigned was quite spacious so it worked out well. We brought our own “rags” and wiped down the bikes in the parking lot before bringing them into the room.

Nevo GX Rohloff as touring bike

Yes, the fields are water saturated, all those years of drought and now the rolling hills look like Ireland. The forecast looks great giving us a month to accuminate as many rides as possible. We joined the local bike club which had two to three rides per week in our class (retired persons with...

Throwing your leg over an E-Bike

The step through is the way to go. I have either a basket for errands or a trunk bag or panniers.

Nevo GX Rohloff as touring bike

That's a good question that we also spent time addressing. The piggybacked power pack battery on the dual battery system is not very attractive. The model with the enclosed power tube battery, minus the dual battery, has an elegant look, unfortunately carrying a second power-tube battery would...

Nevo GX Rohloff as touring bike

One of the great bike touring adventures of the world is riding along the California coast. Here in Santa Cruz we see an endless parade of Americans and Europeans fulfilling their dream of riding from San Fransisco down the central coast, passing through rugged and majestic Big Sur on their way...

The joy of running errands on an ebike

Grocery shopping today, both the front and rear baskets easily come off and into the shopping cart. The rear basket handles the heavier items.(Link Removed - Attachment No Longer Exists)

The joy of running errands on an ebike

Hi Mike, unfortunately Santa Cruz does not have any dedicated paved bike trails. Hopefully this will change in the future with a rails to trails path between Davenport and Watsonville. However I can recommend the Monterey Bay Coasta Recreation trail. It is absolutely fantastic winding through...

Just Sitting Here Looking At The Snow

Hopefully next winter you can schedule for February and we can ride the coast and Redwoods of Santa Cruz. April 1 Lynn and I head south first stopping in the Central Valley then to Orange County and finally arriving in San Diego. It has been a wet and cold winter along the central coast, but...

From my experience the buttons are too softly dampen. This non-decisive feel is magnified when wearing gloves.

Why don't I see more women ebikers? Ladies? Thoughts?

My wife has always been the more athletic person in our relationship, she rode her pedal powered bike 7 miles to work in the beautiful Pittsburgh weather. In the summer she would ride 5 miles to a pool to swim a mile. My energy was a little less. But now that we are retired and split our time...

    2019–2020 R&M Homage : Riders' Impressions

I certainly understand your frustration particularly since the Kiox is “built in “ not allowing you to easily convert to another controller like the Nyon. When I ordered my Nevo GX Rohloff I was upset only the older controller, intuvia, was available .. The Nyon was not an option and the fanthom...

The joy of running errands on an ebike

My wife and I spend the winter months in Santa Cruz with our ebikes being the only form of transportation. It great, the barbershop, grocery stores (a variety for different treats), visiting family, going Downtown for the movies, it makes life much more interactive.

David certainly the Junk needs further explanation. Is the negativity centered around the Kiox controller?

The rain was endless in February making for limited rides but lush landscapes. Quite the difference between the NuVinci and dual battery E-14 Rohloff. It’s been a little bit of a learning curve adjusting to the new transmission but it’s increased efficiency is evident. The dual battery with...

highway 1 is a rural 2 lane road with a very wide shoulder a very well used road for touring bikes. But you do need to keep an eye in the rear view mirror.

From Santa Cruz to Davenport. The path to Davenport is straight up HWY 1 but on out return we veered off the highway and followed a trail along the cliffs.

Using Negative Experiences as Learning Opportunities - What is there to learn from this?

One issue seems to be the inconsistency of bike lanes. In this town alone the bike lane could either be on the far right of the straight and turn right lanes or it could be a smaller green lane sandwiched between the two traffic lanes. It’s confusing to both the motorist and cyclist. As for the...
